The Role

Location: London Hybrid (Office based 1 day per week)

We are a value business, focused on making gyms and fitness accessible to as many people as possible. Data is at the heart of how we run our business, starting from where to open our gyms, through what we offer within them through to how we engage with past, current, and future members. Combining the data from our 2.5 million plus members with data about locations, operations, and performance allows us to unlock industry leading insights and drive a better member experience and commercial performance.

Data is a core competitive advantage to use as market leader, helping us guide decisions at scale and personalisation at the member level. To unlock the value of data, PureGym has built a Group Insights & Analytics function, comprised of a Data Engineering team, a Data Science team and an Insights team, recognising the importance of close collaboration of data teams to quickly and efficiently deliver business value.

Our cloud-based technology stack builds on Azure Databricks to ensure data is reliably and easily available to the business. As we continue to grow, we are moving towards a group data platform and are looking for someone to lead on this journey and help shape the approach to data across the group. Our goal is a unified data platform to enable data driven decision-making and self-service across all countries in our group and this role plays a critical part of that journey.

We are looking for a Data Engineering Manager to manage our London-based Data Engineering team, taking ownership of our data platform delivering and growing data and self-serve capabilities across the group. A successful candidate will be able to balance delivery of business value with security and scalability and be part of shaping how data is managed and used. This includes expanding the data brought into our data platform, evolving the data models and ways data is being shared and accessed, as well as managing the data governance, always with an eye on how data delivers value across the group.

ThecoreremitoftheroleistodrivethedeliveryofPureGym’sdataplatformwithassociatedcapabilitiesandbusinessenablement.Asaresult,themainresponsibilitiesoftheroleare:

  • Own the day-to-day delivery of Data Engineering activities, ensuring reliability, performance and evolution of the data platform
  • Manage and mentor team members, supporting them in their delivery, development and growth
  • Manage third-party Data Engineering services, ensuring service-levels are met and value is being delivered
  • Translate business needs and objectives in data projects, working closely with both technical and business stakeholders in their delivery
  • Shapeandensureadherencetodatagovernancepractice
  • Owndataqualityanddataqualityreporting
  • ExploreadditionaldatasourcesthatcanaugmentPureGym’sdataassettocreatebusinessvalue
  • EngagewiththewiderdatacommunitytoensurePureGymleveragestherighttoolsandtechniquesforworkingwithdata
  • Work with colleagues in the wider technology function to share best practice Azure and cloud management practices
  • ContributetothestrategyandvisionoftheoverarchingInsights&Analyticsfunction

The Person

We are looking for someone with the majority of the below:

  • 5+ years in Data Engineering
  • Experience with:
  • B2C, ideally subscription businesses
  • managing and mentoring team members, as well as planning and managing their delivery
  • a combination of data assets, such as ERP, CRM, e-commerce, and people data
  • a multi-country data platform
  • Azure Databricks, Fivetran and dbt
  • Good understanding of data governance and GDPR
  • Desire to work closely with business stakeholders and see work delivering real world impact and enabling a data culture
  • Ability to communicate complex engineering problems in everyday language
  • Understanding of the financial consequences of IT decisions
  • Positive, problem solving, entrepreneurial
  • A continual improvement mindset with a passion for delivering great outcomes
