Sedgefield | Hybrid working (typically 3 days on-site) | £38,000 - £46,000 per annum

About the Role

CPI is seeking aAI Software Engineer to join their Electronic Engineering team in Sedgefield, delivering AI, software and digital solutions as part ofend-to-end product development programmes.

This is not a maintenance or support role; You will be involved in building real products - from initial concept through to deployment - working alongside electronics and hardware engineers to deliver innovative solutions used in healthcare, medtech, sensors, wearables, and industrial environments.

You will contribute to the full software lifecycle, including application development, cloud-based systems, and (where applicable) AI-enabled solutions. This role offers rare exposure to thecomplete journey from prototype to market, including integration with hardware, sensors, and embedded systems.

Hybrid working is supported, typically three days per week on-site, with flexibility depending on project needs.

What You'll Be Responsible For:

Product & Software Development

  • Design, build, and deliver software products from concept through to production
  • Contribute to full-stack development across backend services, web, and mobile applications
  • Work closely with electronics and hardware engineers to integrate software with physical devices and sensors

Core Technology Stack

  • Develop backend systems and applications usingPython (essential)
  • Build user interfaces and applications usingReact and React Native
  • Contribute tocloud-hosted web applications, ideally using Node.js or similar technologies

AI & Advanced Software (where applicable)

  • Contribute toAI-enabled applications, including data-driven and intelligent systems
  • Support model training, fine-tuning, and deployment where experience allows
  • Work with tools and approaches such as:
    • MLflow and model lifecycle tools
    • Gradient boosted trees or custom model development
    • AI application frameworks (e.g. LangChain, RAG-style architectures)

Experience across bothAI application developmentandmodel development is highly desirable, though not essential.

Collaboration & Delivery

  • Work within a small, highly capablemulti-disciplinary team
  • Take ownership for delivering complex software components in a hands-on way
  • Contribute to technical decision-making, architecture discussions, and solution design
  • Engage across busy project environments with frequent collaboration and stakeholder interaction

About You:

You are ahands-on software engineer who enjoys building products rather than maintaining legacy systems. You're comfortable working across multiple technologies and don't need everything tightly defined before you start.
You'll thrive in asmall team environment, where flexibility, curiosity, and self-direction are valued.
You'll bring:

  • StrongPython development experience (essential)
  • Experience building applications usingReact and/or React Native
  • Full-stack development experience with modern frameworks and technologies
  • Evidence of deliveringcomplex projects or products
  • A practical, problem-solving mindset

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Experience withNode.js in cloud or web applications
  • Exposure toAI / machine learning, including model development or AI-powered applications
  • Experience with firmware, microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi, or embedded systems
  • Use of lightweight ML frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow Lite) on devices
  • Personal projects, side projects, or self-driven development work

Candidates who have worked insmall teams or onself-led technical projects often thrive in this environment.

Why Join CPI?

  • Rare opportunity to work ontrue end-to-end product development
  • Exposure to hardware, electronics, sensors, and software in one role
  • Challenging, varied technical problems across multiple industries
  • Small, collaborative team with wide technical scope
  • Competitive salary (£38k-£46k) and hybrid working

Location & Working Pattern

  • Based at CPI'sSedgefield site
  • Hybrid working typically3 days on-site, with flexibility based on project needs
  • Some weeks may require increased on-site presence
  • Role operates in a busy, highly collaborative environment, so ideally someone who can work closely with hardware engineers onsite

Where to Advertise Machine Learning Jobs in the UK (2026 Guide)

Where to advertise machine learning jobs UK in 2026: the specialist boards and communities that reach ML, MLOps and deep learning engineering talent. The candidate pool is small, highly specialised and in demand across AI labs, financial services, healthcare, autonomous systems and consumer technology simultaneously. Machine learning engineers and researchers move between roles through professional networks, conference communities and specialist platforms — not general job boards where ML roles compete with unrelated software engineering positions for the same audience. This guide, published by MachineLearningJobs.co.uk, covers where to advertise machine learning roles in the UK in 2026, how the main platforms compare, what employers should expect to pay, and what the data says about hiring across different role types.

Machine Learning Jobs UK 2026: What to Expect Over the Next 3 Years

Machine Learning Jobs UK 2026: roles, salaries and the MLOps, LLM and generative AI hiring trends shaping UK ML careers over the next three years. Machine learning has undergone a transformation that few technology disciplines can match. In the space of three years it has moved from a specialism sitting at the edges of most organisations' technology strategies to a capability that sits at the centre of them. The tools have changed, the expectations have shifted, and the range of industries treating machine learning as a core business function — rather than an experimental one — has expanded dramatically. For job seekers, this creates both opportunity and complexity in roughly equal measure. The machine learning jobs market of 2026 is significantly larger than it was three years ago, but it is also significantly more demanding. Employers have developed more sophisticated expectations, the technical bar for specialist roles has risen, and the landscape of tools, frameworks, and architectural patterns that practitioners are expected to know has broadened considerably. The candidates who will thrive over the next three years are those who understand where the discipline is heading — which specialisms are attracting the most investment, which technologies are reshaping what machine learning engineers and researchers are expected to build, and how the definition of a machine learning career is evolving beyond the model-building core toward a much wider range of roles across the full ML lifecycle. This article breaks down what the UK machine learning jobs market is likely to look like through to 2028 — covering the titles emerging right now, the technologies driving employer demand, the skills that will matter most, and how to position your career ahead of the curve.
