Mechanical Design Engineer

Alexander Associates are working with a groundbreaking start up in the space industry with a very unique project.

Our client are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the design, testing, and prototyping of flight hardware for spacecraft. You will work on UK-developed technologies and contribute to system-level mechanical architecture. The role involves solving design problems, providing technical justification, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The position is open to various experience levels, with responsibilities tailored to the selected candidate.

Mechanical Design Engineer key responsibilities:

  1. Design mechanical systems for spacecraft, structures, MGSE, actuators, and mechanisms.
  2. Develop system architectures impacting mission hardware.
  3. Perform analyses to meet hardware performance, life, and environmental requirements.
  4. Use CAD for system modelling and documentation.
  5. Support assembly and testing, including shock, vibration, and space environment assessments.
  6. Identify and address technical roadblocks.
  7. Deliver high-quality engineering products on time.
  8. Support business development from an engineering perspective.
  9. Present effectively to the team and customers.
  10. Maintain positive working relationships within the department.


Required Qualifications for the Mechanical Design Engineer:

  1. Proficient in CAD and analysis tools.
  2. Experience in developing mechanical systems for space applications.
  3. Ability to work autonomously and critically review designs.
  4. Collaborative, with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  5. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.


Nice to Haves:

  1. Experience with LabView, MATLAB, SolidWorks, and Ansys.
  2. Familiarity with thermal and electrical teams for integrated product design.
  3. Experience with flight hardware and space operations.
  4. Knowledge of rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking (RPOD).
