BI Technical Engineer

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Business Intelligence (BI) Team as a BI Technical Engineer at The Veterinary Defence Society (VDS).

You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping our data and reporting capabilities—supporting informed decision-making, improving service delivery, and helping our teams make the most of data. This position combines data engineering, analytics, and stakeholder collaboration, offering an excellent opportunity to grow within a forward-thinking organisation.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain robust data pipelines into the data warehouse
• Create and maintain consistent business-wide data definitions and KPIs
• Develop interactive dashboards and reports to support data-driven decision-making
• Analyse data to uncover trends, patterns, and insights
• Collaborate with IT, Finance, Marketing, Compliance, and Operations teams
• Present insights and reports to senior leadership
• Identify and address data quality issues and improve data processes
• Contribute to project teams, ensuring data requirements are addressed from the outset
• Continuously improve BI tools and data engineering practices

Required Skills & Experience

• Proficiency in SQL, ETL processes, data warehousing, and data modelling (MS SQL preferred)
• Proven experience in data engineering or analysis
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication skills – able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
• Experience using dashboard tools (Power BI preferred)
• Attention to detail and a proactive, collaborative attitude

Desirable Skills (Not Essential)

• Power BI: DAX, Power Query, M Code
• Python
• Azure Blob Storage
• Jira
• Knowledge of GDPR and data protection standards
• Degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
