We are currently working with one of the world's leading environmental and engineering consultancies with over employees worldwide. They are looking to add a Senior Hydraulic Modeller to their division in Hayward's Heath, West Sussex.
Their existing hydraulic modelling teams support a range of clients including local authorities, the Environment Agency, SEPA, Natural Resources Wales, DfI-Rivers and the World Bank through strategic framework appointments as well as insurance companies, utility companies and developers to deliver a range of flood risk and environmental management studies.
With a background in hydraulic modelling, this role will principally be working on a range of flood risk projects ranging from detailed flood mapping studies to flood defence strategies and appraisal to integrated catchment modelling to managed surface water flooding as well as helping solve complex engineering challenges. As such, the successful applicant will work alongside their engineering and design teams providing advice and technical support as part of the design of flood defences. These projects make a difference to local communities and the environment, serving a range of public and private sector clients including regulators, local authorities, water utility and strategic construction companies.
Key areas of responsibility:
Taking a technical leadership role in ensuring flood management project deliverables meet clients' needs including taking ownership and responsibility for the quality of project work to meet the highest standards. Working with other senior staff across the company to develop medium and long term strategies for the developing existing workstreams and identifying areas for expansion for the modelling teams. Championing technical innovation to improve efficiency and quality of delivery, playing a central role in demonstrating and disseminating the latest methodologies and tools. Liaising with clients, hydraulic modellers, project managers and other design and management team members. Mentoring and supporting the technical development of less experienced colleagues in the team. Providing modelling-related technical input to business development activities across the wider company. Working alongside colleagues in their Data Science and AI teams to identify opportunities for applying next generation techniques, such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, across the modelling discipline.

Is a flexible team player, able to work with different project teams both locally and across remote offices.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in civil engineering or environmental/earth sciences. Chartered status (e.g. ICE, CIWEM) is important to the company and valued by their clients. Applicants should be Chartered or be able to demonstrate their commitment towards becoming Chartered with an appropriate professional body.
Essential attributes for the role
Experience of key fluvial hydraulic modelling software packages including HEC-RAS, HEC-2D, Flood Modeller-TUFLOW, Infoworks-ICM, and the application across urban and rural environments, using 1D, 2D or 1D-2D techniques, for fluvial and surface water systems. Ability to deliver of innovative solutions to difficult challenges including complex hydraulic problems. Understanding and experience of fluvial and surface water flood risk policy and management approaches Experience of flood risk management techniques and methods including options appraisal. Project management including providing guidance to project teams with oversight of hydrological, hydraulic and environmental inputs, on a variety of flood risk management projects. Proficiency in using GIS software such as ArcGIS/QGIS/MapInfo. The ability to produce high quality technical writing for bid and project work.
Desirable attributes for the role
Working knowledge of a broad range of modelling techniques such Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and how it can be applied across the industry. Knowledge of UK hydrological methodologies; understanding of Flood Estimation Handbook Techniques is an advantage. Experience of liaising with clients and managing projects to develop new opportunities. Experience of working closely with design teams to develop engineering solutions is desirable. Commercial awareness and evidence of ability to deliver projects and bids to time and budget.
