EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Severn Trent is advancing its data platforms to the next level, and we’re seeking a

Senior Data Engineer

to bring

advanced Azure Synapse Analytics expertise

to our team.
In this pivotal role, you’ll design, build, and optimise scalable data pipelines that support analytics, reporting, and data science across the business. You’ll work closely with analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to ensure data is accurate, accessible, and performance-optimised — all within a modern Azure-based environment.
We’re investing in our data platform, and this role offers the opportunity to work with tools like Azure Synapse ,

Data Lake , and

Databricks , while contributing to the evolution of our data engineering practices.
Here at Severn Trent, we embrace innovation, and you will be looked upon to adopt best practices in data engineering and stay updated with emerging technologies.
Key Accountabilities in the role include:-
Pipeline Design and Development:

Architect, implement, and manage data pipelines that collect, process, and store large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
Data Lake Optimisation and Querying:

Develop and optimise external tables within Azure Synapse’s SQL pool, leveraging parquet-based data storage in the data lake for efficient querying and seamless data access.
Data Quality and Governance:

Implement data quality checks and data management procedures while ensuring that data security and compliance obligations are met.
Performance Optimization:

Optimize data processing and storage solutions for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
Technical Direction:

Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the data engineering team, conducting code reviews and ensuring best practices are followed.
Documentation and Communication:

Maintain comprehensive documentation of data processes and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
Of course, it’s important that we attract the right skill sets, and those with the right experience but we value character, positivity, and a caring attitude in equal weight.
We’re looking for someone with a strong foundation in SQL and advanced experience with Azure Synapse Analytics, alongside other Azure data services such as Data Lake and Data Factory. You’ll also bring proven capability in PySpark, with experience building scalable data transformation workflows and working with large datasets in distributed environments.
Experience with Databricks is a plus, as is familiarity with DevOps and ML Ops practices that support collaboration with analytics and data science teams. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, communicating clearly, and taking ownership of your work.
We value curiosity, collaboration, and a proactive mindset just as much as technical skills.
We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality as we know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our communities. We employ thousands of people from across our community who really care about what they do. Because that is how we do what we do.
We do more because we care.
