The role

The Senior Rail Risk and Safety Analyst will assist and lead on the maintenance and development of data-driven risk models and/or decision support tools, and help our members apply them so they can make decisions that deliver a safe and efficient railway. You will work alongside other analysts, health and safety professionals and technical specialists, applying your analysis skills to generate insights from data and support safety improvement across the GB rail industry. Through this you will help deliver the Rail Health and Safety Strategy and strengthen RSSB’s position as a centre of excellence in risk management, analysis and data-driven insights.

About the team

The Rail Safety and Standards Board is the independent safety, standards and research body for Great Britain’s rail network. We help to make an evolving railway safer, healthier, more efficient and more sustainable. We manage a research programme; collect, collate and analyse data; and develop standards for the railway across Great Britain. We deliver standards, information and guidance for all aspects of railway operations, as well as health and wellbeing, sustainability, infrastructure and rolling stock asset integrity, customer satisfaction, performance, and safety. Through our Affiliation programme we also make some of that information and guidance available to overseas organisations and other industries.

RSSB’s Risk and Safety Intelligence (RSI) Department manages and analyses health and safety data and undertakes risk assessments and risk modelling for the GB railway. It also develops guidance and tools and supports their use so that rail operators can manage risk effectively and efficiently. Its products and services are used across the rail industry to inform decisions that affect the safety and health of rail workers, passengers and the wider public.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and understand changes in railway-wide risk using event data from RSSB’s Safe Insights platform and other sources to help decision makers understand health and safety performance and identify and prioritise issues.
  • Identify actionable health and safety insights through in-depth data analysis and by evaluating evidence from sources such as accident investigation reports and operational feedback.
  • Produce dashboards, deliver presentations and write reports on risk and safety performance for a range of stakeholders and industry groups.
  • Plan and deliver the development and update of sections of our Safety Risk Model, which quantifies the risk associated with railway operations and maintenance.
  • Review the quality of safety event data and support data improvement activity.
  • Actas technical lead for risk assessments and safety-related cost-benefit analysis, including to support changes to Standards.
  • Engage with our industry members to understand their health and safety problems and provide them with information and support to help solve them.
  • Work with colleagues from across RSSB to develop and maintain key products and services and support their application.
  • Support the technical development of others in the team.

Qualifications / Experience

Essential:

  • Possesses analysis skills built on:
    • Technical foundations, as might be gained through a degree in mathematics, science, engineering or a related discipline or through the equivalent experience.
    • Experience of applying analysis skills to real-world problems
    • An inquisitive mind and an ability to quickly understand complex information and apply analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Communicates effectively and shares thoughts and ideas through methods appropriate to the audience
  • Adapts and responds effectively when embracing new opportunities, change and in navigating
  • Actively contributes as part of a team and works towards achieving team goals and

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in Microsoft Excel, SQL and Power BI, and programming experience, ideally with Python.
  • Experience of safety-related work, or a knowledge of or interest in these
  • Experience of work related to railway operations and engineering, or a knowledge of or interest in the GB railway.
