Post Title: Research Fellow on Machine Learning for Wireless Sensing and Communication

FTE: 1 (working 37 hours per week)


Contract Type: Fixed‑Term


Salary: UH7 £38,784 pa to £46,049 pa by annual increments on achieving designated skills and experience


Annual Leave: 35 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year


Location: Hatfield, Hybrid


Overview

We are seeking a full‑time Research Fellow on Machine Learning for Wireless Sensing and Communication to join the Communications and Intelligent Systems (CIS) Research Lab in the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire.


This role will contribute the development of novel machine learning algorithms for wireless sensing and communication and the proof of concepts for next‑generation wireless communication, collaborating with other team members within the group, and external research institutes and industry partners within UK Federated Telecoms Hubs and beyond. We have hardware‑based radar and communication systems for fresh data collection, providing opportunities for hands‑on, first‑hand, high impact research.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement machine learning algorithms for radar/comm applications.
  • Establish clear research objectives and engage in collaborative projects.
  • Disseminate research findings through high‑impact publications and conference presentations.
  • Collaborate with external partners and stakeholders to maximise research activities.
  • No teaching duties are required.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Research expertise in machine learning algorithm design and applications.
  • Research experience in radar sensing and/or communication, such as channel modelling, signal analysis & classification, target recognition.
  • Hands‑on experience in demonstration development will be a plus.
  • Strong track record in machine learning and/or wireless communication, radar sensing.

Qualifications Required

  • PhD degree (or equivalent qualification) in electronics engineering, or closely related subjects (such as Computer Science, Maths, Engineering or Physics).
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and problem‑solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Possess a strong track record in machine learning, and/or wireless communication, radar sensing.
  • Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate may be required.

Contract Details

This post is fixed‑term until 31 March 2026 with possible extension.
