Job Description

The salary for this role is£67,023  (inclusive of a Market Premium Payment (MPP) £7,300) .Onsite workingis expected for 4 days each week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working. 

This role is available at both Whitehaven, Cumbria, and Culham, Oxfordshire, with the primary focus of activities located in Whitehaven, Cumbria. Extensive travel may be required to the alternative location. Also, International travel to customer’s and collaborator’s sites may be required.

This role requires employees tocomplete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and be eligible for SC Clearance (must have resided in the UK for the last 5 years), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data. 

The Role

As a Principal Technologist, you will serve as the technical expert, providing leadership on a variety of complex digital, data and AI technology projects with focus on Robotics. Your work will cover all aspects of technology development, including research, design, deployment, and demonstration of digital data and AI systems. You will produce high-quality software and offer software engineering expertise to project teams. A key part of your role will also involve building and supporting a multidisciplinary team of technologists and engineers with diverse experience in digital technology.

If you have a strong ability to apply data science and AI technologies for robotics, a willingness to learn and apply new technologies, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a proven ability to lead and work within a team, along with a solid track record of engaging with senior stakeholders, we’d love to hear from you.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Plan engineering activities, including estimating required effort, costs, and timescales, while ensuring delivery of technical outputs within time, quality, cost, and risk performance criteria.
  • Oversee procurement of application infrastructure, software modules, and services, and lead the commissioning and integration of system components.
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership to Technologists, Engineers, and Managers, particularly in system control-related issues, while mentoring Programmers and Developers.
  • Represent RACE with internal and external stakeholders, maintaining professional networks and acting as the primary interface on project work or areas of specific expertise.
  • Lead the production of Work Control Packs and other elements of safe systems of work to ensure a safe environment for teams, while maintaining and managing software quality across the project portfolio.


Qualifications

Essential:

  • A proven ability of technical leadership in a complex project delivery environment.
  • Proven expertise's in Sofware Development and expertise in software for robotics and remote handling.
  • Degree in Software Engineering or technical subject or equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • Extensive industry experience working in software engineering or related field.
  • Strong programming capability to develop working, understandable software in at least one language used in relevant applications.
  • A strong understanding of software engineering techniques and design principles, including lifecycle, version control and documentation.
  • Experience with good development practices throughout the software development lifecycle such as version control and testing.

Desirable:

  • PhD in a related Robotics and AI subject.
  • Experience with Robotics / Machine Learning / Computer Vision / Automated Planning.
  • Experience of mathematical modelling and optimisation.
  • Familiarity with system modelling.
  • An interest in mobile robotics and engineering.
  • Understanding of sensor fusion techniques.
  • Membership of a Professional Institution / Chartered Engineer.
