We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanentPrincipal Pavement Engineerto join ourConsulting Highwaysteam. With shared office space in numerous locations, we welcome applications from Principal Engineers acrossEngland.


National Highways have named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme that National Highways have ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables National Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for the next 3 years. Amey is the design partner for National Highways in their South West and Midlands regions.


In addition to National Highways projects, Amey are on the Midlands Highway Alliance framework, winning improvement schemes across many local authorities, and have upcoming opportunities on projects in Northern Ireland, which include pavement assessment and design work.


The role


As a Principal Engineer you will be a technical team leader, providing effective support and assistance to your Design Team, and support thePavement and Asset Management Practicedeliver their portfolio of schemes for Clients. Experience of building and developing teams, which will support and provide technical support to our existing contracts and frameworks, would be an advantage. You will help lead and deliver a variety of pavement schemes, including pavement condition assessments and managing detailed design schemes. As part of the role, you’ll be expected to mentor junior designers/engineers to share knowledge and experience.


Responsibilities include:

  • To act as a technical team leader, providing advice, guidance and supervision as appropriate to technical teams, operational managers, client and suppliers. Mentor and coach team members and take responsibility for the technical development of staff. It is expected that you shall work in the office 3 days to week to help develop and mentor to team.
  • Leading the preparation and checking of designs, reports, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
  • Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets, resources and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level and higher, including presenting proposals, attending progress meetings and responding to queries.
  • Significantly contributing to and leading the preparation of bids and the general work winning function, taking responsibility for the preparation of technical and commercial offers.
  • Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.
  • Support in work winning, including supporting and preparing bids/tenders and establish, maintain and develop relationships with existing and prospective internal and external clients.
  • Ensure innovation and best practice is highlighted and adopted where practicable.



What you will bring to us:


  • High level of experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Previous experience of delivering feasibility and detailed design projects on National Highways and Local Authority frameworks.
  • Experience of pavement investigation and detailed design of asphalt & concrete pavements.
  • Able to produce and lead the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements. Practical working knowledge of the DMRB and associated documents, including the Specification for Highway Works. Experience in identifying and seeking approvals for departures from standard where required.
  • Highly experienced with relevant software and similar analytical tools.
  • Experience of managing project related tasks, including the management of health, safety and welfare and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of design and specification process with ability to manage others. Demonstrates a full understanding of the project scope and acts as Design Team Lead for both minor and major projects
  • Demonstrates an excellent understanding of CDM and risk assessment. Highly experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
  • Supervisory and people manager skills. Capable of managing or influencing the actions of technical teams regardless of office location, project or account, including the multidisciplinary environment and to undertake the people manager role. Experience of client interface and collaboration.
  • Good ability to check work produced by others to a high standard.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional certification, gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned.
  • Pavement Engineer Certification – Amey would support candidates in obtaining this certification in the future.
