Data Scientist

Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges.

About the Role:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Taipale group for a 2-year fixed-term contract with the potential to extend.

The laboratory consists of experimental biologists and computer scientists who focus on the study of transcriptional control of cell growth, using functional genomics and systems biology, and mouse genetic models.

You will be responsible for:

  • Development of technologies and methods for the study of gene expression using genomics and computational approaches, for example setting up advanced methods for parallel genomic integration of large DNA payloads
  • Writing up manuscripts, communicating results through talking, presenting posters at scientific meetings
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external collaborators to ensure project progress and provide regular updates
  • Taking an active part in your development, including attending training and being an active member of our Postdoctoral Fellow community

About You:

Applicants should have, or will soon have, a PhD in computational biology, molecular biology, genetics, or biochemistry.

The successful applicant will also have flexibility within the role to pursue an independent research project in the general remit of gene expression in relation to the grant. Candidates with interest or experience in machine learning, artificial intelligence and programming are encouraged to apply.

You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.

About Us:

The Taipale group is newly established at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

Current lines of work include high-throughput determination of binding sites and binding specificities of human transcription factors, and using this information to identify regulatory elements that control cell growth during normal development and in cancer (see, for example Hallikas et al., Cell 124:47-59, 2006; Sur et al., Science 338:1360-1363, 2012; Jolma et al., Cell 152:327-339, 2013; Jolma et al., Nature 527:384-388, 2015; Yin et al., Science 356:eaaj2239, 2017; Zhu et al., Nature 562:76-81, 2018; Yan et al., Nature 591:147-151, 2021; Sahu et al., Nature Genetics 54:283-294, 2022).

The lab benefits from access to cutting-edge facilities at the Wellcome Sanger Institute such as DNA sequencing, Cell Operations and Automation.

We aim to decipher the regulatory genetic code using random DNA and measuring its activity using experimental and AI models (see Nature 625, 41-50, 2024). The work profile will be a combination of wet-lab and dry-lab tasks.

Other Information:

Please apply with your CV and a Cover Letter outlining how you meet the criteria set out above. Please also indicate in your cover letter why you are interested in joining the Taipale group and this research area.

Salary:£38,000 - £45,413 depending on experience.

Closing Date:09-FEB 2025

Contract duration:2-years fixed term
