Applications are invited for the role of MachineLearning Engineer – AI Imaging Hub. This is a new position for aMachine Learning Engineer, working primarily at The Royal Marsdenbut in close collaboration with The Institute of Cancer Research(ICR). The Royal Marsden, together with its academic partner theICR, is designated as the UK's only NIHR BRC dedicated solely tocancer. This post is suitable for an engineer or scientist with thedesire to apply machine and deep learning methodology to real-worldclinical problems. The Machine Learning Engineer will be working ona programme whose aims are to evaluate and help developstate-of-the-art AI algorithms using a dedicated machine learningoperations (MLOps) platform. Algorithms that pass the evaluationwill be used by clinicians managing the treatment of cancerpatients, and by scientists developing and evaluating noveltherapies. Main duties of the job The successful post holder willbe an active member and will be supported by team members andinfrastructure within the AI Imaging Hub: Leadership. The Hub isled by 2 co-directors and managed by a transformation lead.Multidisciplinary manpower. The hub hosts data scientists,informaticians, research radiographers and radiographer AIchampions, radiologist AI champions, clinical trial managers andcoordinators; imaging scientists and students. We work closely withkey partners such as the clinical MRI research group, IntegratedPathology Unit, Biomedical Research Informatics Digital Environment(BRIDgE) teams and Data Stewards Group. Data access andorganisation. Our in-house expertise has created an imagerepository – XNAT - which has now been adopted by the 7 CRUK NCITAsites as the data repository platform of choice. The hub team willmaintain and expand the capabilities of XNAT, which is the backbonedata management system for our imaging AI and radiomics pipelinesand has provided crucial leverage in securing competitive funding.We have recently set up a machine learning operations (MLOps)platform to evaluate AI algorithms, either developed in house orbrought in by a third party, in a real-world clinical environment.Working for our organisation The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trustis a world-leading cancer centre. Detailed job description and mainresponsibilities For further information on this role, please seethe attached detailed Job Description and Person Specification: -Use MLOps to evaluate algorithms that can be used prognostically orpredictively for steering patient treatment and detecting responseto treatment. - To lead, create, evolve and be responsible for aspecialist training programme covering all aspects of the MLOpsplatform. This training will be mandatory for scientists,clinicians and supporting staff members to interact with the MLOpsplatform. - Develop algorithms, using machine and deep learningmethodology, that may be used with a combination of radiologicalimages and other data for tumour detection, segmentation,characterisation, response to treatment and prognostication. -Build and line manage a team to deliver MLOps services bothinternally and externally, providing daily supervision andco-ordination of these staff members. This includes workforceplanning and staff recruitment to grow a modern engineering anddata scientist team. Person specification Education/Qualifications- Good honours degree or equivalent in a mathematical, engineering,scientific or computing discipline - A PhD or equivalentdoctoral-level qualification in a relevant field. Experience - Theapplication of machine learning and/or deep learning for imageanalysis. - Scientific programming in Python. - Competence inanother scripting language (R, Julia, shell scripting, etc) or anobject-oriented language (C++, Java, etc). - Experience presentingcomplex information so that it is understandable to colleagues anda wider audience. - Experience preparing work for publication inacademic journals. - Knowledge and/or prior experience with git forsoftware version control and dvc for tracking ML experiments -Experience with survival or time-to-event analysis - Experiencewith AI software development, regulatory requirements andunderstanding routes to commercialization.
