We are seeking

talented postdoctoral researchers to take up exciting Fellowship opportunities at the Mathematical Institute. Up to seven appointments will be made across the Hooke and Titchmarsh Fellowships in this recruitment. The Fellowships are full-time, and fixed-term for up to 36 months; applications for job shares or for part-time working to accommodate family circumstances will be considered. Candidates will have research interests compatible with those of our current faculty in the following research groups: mathematical biology, mathematical and computational finance, numerical analysis, machine learning and data science, or the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (OCIAM); you must clearly state at the start of your supporting letter which one of these research groups you feel is closest to your work. The successful applicants will be talented researchers, who have already produced excellent research during their PhD and in any postdoctoral positions. Securing a Fellowship will offer you the freedom to conduct your own research programme. To aid the development of their academic profile, Fellows will be required to contribute up to three hours of teaching per week for the 24 weeks of each academic year to support the department, averaged over the period of the Fellowship to allow for extended visits elsewhere. (The exact nature of this teaching will be in accordance with departmental need as determined by the Head of Department, noting that the department may require you to teach in a college to provide cover for a member of faculty). Candidates will have, or be close to completing, a PhD in mathematics or a related discipline. They must show evidence of independence and the ability to undertake research of the highest academic standard, hold an outstanding record of papers published in major international journals (commensurate with career stage), and have a realisable and relevant research plan which would enhance the research profile of the Mathematical Institute. Additional information about the posts, and a full list of selection criteria, are available in the job descriptions. We proudly hold a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our strategic aim to improve staff equality and diversity, we would particularly welcome applications from women and from BME candidates, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type within the department. Applicants should read the job description before writing their application.

Pre-Employment Checks for Machine Learning Jobs: DBS, References & Right-to-Work and more Explained

Pre-employment screening in machine learning reflects the discipline's unique position at the intersection of artificial intelligence research, algorithmic decision-making, and transformative business automation. Machine learning professionals often have privileged access to proprietary datasets, cutting-edge algorithms, and strategic AI systems that form the foundation of organizational competitive advantage and automated decision-making capabilities. The machine learning industry operates within complex regulatory frameworks spanning AI governance directives, algorithmic accountability requirements, and emerging ML ethics regulations. Machine learning specialists must demonstrate not only technical competence in model development and deployment but also deep understanding of algorithmic fairness, AI safety principles, and the societal implications of automated decision-making at scale. Modern machine learning roles frequently involve developing systems that impact hiring decisions, financial services, healthcare diagnostics, and autonomous operations across multiple regulatory jurisdictions and ethical frameworks simultaneously. The combination of algorithmic influence, predictive capabilities, and automated decision-making authority makes thorough candidate verification essential for maintaining compliance, fairness, and public trust in AI-powered systems.
