Head of Enterprise Data Engineering

Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

Total Package:Base Pay Range £67,000 - £77,000

FCDO would match the base pay of existing Civil Servants if joining on level transfer. Existing Civil Servants would receive the greater of (i) the pay range minima or (ii) a 10% increase in current salary, if applying on promotion.

A non-pensionable, non-consolidated specialist allowance may be offered up to £20,000 depending on demonstration of skills, competence, experience, and location.

A non-pensionable, non-consolidated Location Allowance of up to £5,000 may also apply, subject to location.

Location:London, Milton Keynes, East Kilbride (hybrid working minimum 60% in-office)

Your role with us

Our Information and Digital Directorate aims to make the FCDO the most technologically integrated and innovative foreign ministry globally. This involves harnessing digital, data, technology, IT security, and information management to support our diplomatic, development, and consular goals while ensuring safety and security.

We are seeking a Data Engineering leader with outstanding technical skills to enhance data utilization for decision-making and lead analytics delivery.

You will work with senior team members to identify, plan, develop, and deliver data services and technical approaches for Data Engineers across the FCDO, aiming to strengthen professional capacity and coherence.

Opportunities for professional development include online learning, overseas visits, and networking with data leaders in other government departments.

For your team, you will provide technical leadership and career development, overseeing learning pathways, capability assessments, and fostering high performance. Your team will produce key data products on our Microsoft Azure Data Platform and other cloud systems like Oracle and AWS, making evidence-based decisions on tools and services.

You will mediate with stakeholders at all levels, acting as a key communicator between technical and non-technical audiences.

You will identify opportunities for collaboration within UK Government and internationally, presenting data insights to senior leaders while balancing risks and ethics.

Who we're looking for

You have a proven track record in stakeholder management, complex discussions, and managing high-risk situations.

As an expert in data development, you establish enterprise-scale data integration procedures, maintain standards, and ensure best practices. You excel in data innovation, emerging trends, and introducing new ways of working.

You understand metadata repositories, set up governance processes, and anticipate future technology changes.

Your senior leadership experience includes delivering modern data solutions on cloud platforms like Azure, with skills in data transformation, monitoring, and storage. You can effectively plan, prioritize, and communicate your team's work, balancing strategy and immediate needs.
