SALARY:£124,653 - £146,650

LOCATION(S):Manchester or Bristol

HOURS: Full time

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our locations listed above.

About this opportunity

We have a great opportunity for a Head of Data Engineering to be a senior level data expert, technical expert and thought leader.

Working in the Enterprise Data Provisioning Platform, you can help shape the Group’s ambition by enabling the bank to gain value from data by providing safe and efficient Group wide data capabilities and services.

What you'll be doing

We are a large enterprise developing a state-of-the-art data mesh architecture on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to facilitate decentralised, self-serve data products across various teams.

This role involves driving the data product and engineering vision, setting standards, and solving the complex data and technical challenges. You'll be an advocate for best practice and agile methodologies and be passionate about advancing the state of data products and technology. Day to day you’ll be:

Influencing the strategic direction of the organisation by mentoring data engineering teams, and ensuring the delivery of robust, scalable, and innovative data products

Providing deep technical expertise in data engineering

Owning the design, development, and maintenance of data products, ensuring high-quality delivery and alignment with architectural governance

Providing application-level support for data products in live environments, ensuring their reliability and performance

Defining both data and engineering standards, collaborating closely with architecture and platform teams

Advising engineering teams and senior leadership on data technologies, standard practices, and strategy

Identifying emerging trends to drive innovation and ensure a competitive edge

Aligning long-term data strategy with business objectives

Evaluating and selecting new tools, platforms, and technologies to improve both efficiency and data quality

Supporting recruitment, mentoring, coaching, and training of junior data engineers, helping them grow and develop their skills

What skills you’ll need:

Data engineering - Applying best practices to optimise data management processes and architecture across the landscape

Cloud Platform - Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Azure or AWS

Data migrations - Leading and running a cloud-based data migration to ensure a seamless transition and minimal disruption

Data literacy - Communicating with data confidently and effectively to drive decision-making. Promote cross-functional collaboration across the organisation to advance data accessibility and literacy

Data modelling and design - Designing and implementing data models and schemas to ensure efficient data storage, retrieval and interoperability

Values - Forward-thinking, capable of delivering solutions that meet business and customer needs. An early adopter of change, driving organisational transformation at pace with a growth mindset

Leadership - Foster an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued, irrespective of their background. Inspire others to achieve their full potential by demonstrating your experience to offer valuable insights, strategic guidance, and promote effective problem-solving

In addition, any experience of these would be useful:

Experience in GCP services, including BigQuery, Data Fusion, Cloud Composer, IAM, and others

Ability to define objectives and measure metrics
