One team of 21,000 colleagues that's energising a greener, fairer future by creating an energy system that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels, whilst living our powerful commitment to igniting positive change in our communities. Here, you can find more purpose, more passion, and more potential. That’s why working here is #MoreThanACareer. We do energy differently - we do it all. We make it, store it, move it, sell it, and mend it.

About your team:

You’ll be joining Centrica’s Group Data function, working in close partnership with our Data Science and Data Governance teams. Together, we’re building a data ecosystem that powers strategic decision-making and enables the creation of reusable, high-quality data assets across the business.

About your role:

As Head of Data Engineering, you’ll lead the design, development, and optimisation of Centrica’s data infrastructure. You’ll define and execute a forward-thinking data engineering strategy, ensuring our pipelines and platforms are scalable, secure, and aligned with business goals. You’ll mentor a high-performing team, collaborate across departments, and champion best practices in data management, governance, and technology adoption.

You’ll also work closely with the Head of Data Science to ensure our infrastructure supports advanced analytics and modelling, enabling the organisation to harness data-driven insights effectively.

Regular travel to our Windsor and London offices will be required.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, mentoring, and developing a skilled data engineering team

  • Defining and executing the data engineering strategy in alignment with organisational goals

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to understand data requirements

  • Architecting and maintaining robust data pipelines, ETL processes, and data warehouses

  • Evaluating and selecting appropriate data storage, processing, and integration technologies

  • Establishing best practices for scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness

  • Developing and enforcing data governance and management policies

  • Partnering with data science and analytics teams to deliver clean, high-quality data

  • Monitoring infrastructure performance, troubleshooting issues, and implementing optimisations

  • Staying current with emerging technologies and assessing their relevance to Centrica’s strategy.

What we’re looking for:

  • Advanced academic background in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field

  • Experience building large-scale analytics platforms from the ground up

  • Knowledge of real-time data processing, streaming technologies, and data modelling

  • Understanding of data governance frameworks and compliance standards

  • Extensive experience in data engineering, including leadership in complex, enterprise-scale environments

  • Proven ability to deploy data products through development stages into production, with monitoring and observability tools

  • Deep technical expertise in PySpark, SQL, Java, Spark, Databricks, dbt, AWS, and Azure

  • Familiarity with European jurisdictions and global reporting requirements

  • Experience with orchestration and CI/CD tools such as Airflow, Databricks Workflows, and Azure DevOps

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to optimise data processes

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Why should you apply?

We’re not a perfect place – but we’re a people place. Our priority is supporting all of the different realities our people face. Life is about so much more than work. We get it.
