The Department
Mishcon has experienced a huge amount of growth in recent years and our success shows no sign of stopping. Our Technology team also continues to go from strength to strength and we are involved in some incredibly exciting and innovative initiatives across the firm.
Rather than being considered a necessary support function, our Technology department is an integral part of the strategy of the firm, and this is reflected both by the level of tech investment and how Technology initiatives are discussed at the most senior level. These two new roles - a Lead Data Scientist and a Data Scientist - are both within the Technology Function and form part of our Product, Platform, Data operating model.
The Role
We are hiring for two complementary roles as part of our growing Data capability:
- The Lead Data Scientist will sit within the Product Organisation, under the Innovation function, and form part of the Data Product Area. This role will lead the development of innovative, enterprise-grade data solutions and advanced analytics capabilities, working on high-impact initiatives including AI, automation, and new data products. The Lead Data Scientist will be expected to take ownership of solution design, prototype development, strategic experimentation and integrating solutions into broader product and platform architecture. This is a highly collaborative role with regular engagement across product managers, data engineers, and senior stakeholders.
- The Data Scientist will sit within the central Data Function under the Head of Data, supporting a wide range of operational and strategic needs across the Business of Law and Practice of Law. This role is ideal for someone looking to grow their data science career in a hands-on, applied environment. You will work on projects that improve efficiency, transparency, and performance using a combination of dashboards, automation, and core analytics techniques.
Both roles are within the Technology Function and align to our Product, Platform, Data operating model. Collaboration across teams is essential, and both positions offer the opportunity to contribute to an ambitious, maturing data agenda.
Both roles will contribute to the development of analytics solutions that provide real insight and value to the Firm. You'll work across legal and operational domains and be involved in solution design, experimentation, delivery, and improvement. Our goal is to build a modern data capability that helps drive performance, transparency, and innovation in a complex legal environment.
Duties And Responsibilities
Data Strategy & Delivery
- Contribute to the firm's AI strategy and roadmap.
- Develop and implement data science and analytics use cases aligned with business priorities.
- Partner with business teams to frame problems and translate them into analytical projects.
- Design and deploy predictive models and AI/ML prototypes where appropriate
- Support self-serve analytics adoption, including through the Mishcon Academy and internal enablement initiatives
Data Product Development
- Build robust, interpretable models for forecasting, classification, clustering, and optimisation.
- Design and deliver impactful Power BI dashboards and self-serve tools.
- For the Lead role: lead on solution design and prototyping of advanced analytics solutions.
Governance & Architecture
- Support creation and maintenance of certified data models and documentation.
- Embed good governance principles across analytics delivery particularly for regulated or client-sensitive datasets.
- Work with data engineers to develop scalable, production-grade data workflows.
- Ensure close focus on TCO by seeking opportunities for reuse and decommissioning of legacy reporting and rationalisation of unused or duplicated Power BI assets.
Teamwork & Upskilling
- Contribute to the firm's Academy programme and other upskilling efforts.
- Support knowledge-sharing and mentoring across the data and wider technology team.
- Champion responsible AI and develop internal understanding of explainable, ethical use of data.
Skills/Experience
We are looking for candidates with:
- Hands-on experience in Python (inc. pandas, numpy), SQL, and Power BI.
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills.
- For the Lead role: experience designing and delivering end-to-end analytics solutions.
- For the Data Scientist role: some commercial or academic exposure to data science projects.
Other Qualities We Value
- Curious and forward-thinking - always seeking new and better ways to use data.
- Business-aware - understand how data can influence legal and commercial decisions.
- Strong communicators - able to tell compelling data stories for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Collaborative by nature - thrive in cross-functional teams and build trust with stakeholders.
- Self-directed - can manage complexity and ambiguity and take ownership of outcomes.
- Ethically minded - recognise the importance of responsible AI and data privacy in the legal sector.
Working Pattern & Location
These are hybrid roles based in London, with a requirement to work onsite regularly. You'll need to collaborate closely with product peers, legal teams, and business stakeholders — we believe that data science is most successful when it's deeply embedded in the business and in-person engagement plays an important role.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work on cutting-edge problems at the intersection of law and data.
- A collaborative, high-performing team that invests in mentoring and professional development.
- Hybrid working and a progressive, inclusive culture.
- Career growth in a rapidly evolving, tech-enabled legal environment.
- Exposure to senior stakeholders and meaningful, high-impact work.
- Access to the Mishcon Academy and a wide range of thought leadership and learning opportunities.
Please note that this job profile is not an exhaustive list of duties but merely an outline of the key components of the role. You may be required by your line manager to take on additional responsibilities when requested.
