Your New Role

Hitachi Rail have a great opportunity for an experienced Data Science Engineer to join our team. As a Data Science Engineer, you conduct data science and data engineering activities to a deliver a world‑class level of condition monitoring. We’re looking for someone to make an impact and be able to deliver in a dynamic and fast paced environment.


Typical activities will include working on offline data analysis, developing condition monitoring algorithms, working with other members of the cross functional Perpetuum Onboard Analytics team, involvement in new capability development, delivering insight to customers and supporting production systems in terms of assessing performance of deployed analytics.


What you’ll be doing

  • To work with the Analytical Services Engineering manager to develop the Perpetuum Onboard Analytics function for specific items in the latest agreed Development Roadmap, with the objective of providing a world‑class level of analytics expertise.
  • To carry out data analysis on the sensor data and extract information to provide value to customers. To design new condition monitoring algorithms when new customers or assets come online, and to regularly refine and improve existing customer’s algorithms and thresholds as part of our continual improvement strategy.
  • To write reports documenting the results of each study, appropriately written with the intended audience in mind. Keep internal reports under change control (vault), and follow the ECO process for external reports.
  • To write software as required to support the business requirements and perform data analysis. Keep any software intended for re‑use under source control and publicise new software tools / libraries to the team where suitable. Include automated tests for any software that is to be deployed to the cloud / production.
  • To generate images / visualisations / slides for the commercial team demonstrating analytical capabilities and positive results.
  • To publicise and maintain awareness of resources, tools, libraries and techniques that have been developed within the team and help to ensure these are documented.
  • To work closely with the other members of the Analytics team, learning from senior members of the team to develop the required expertise.
  • To investigate potential causes for HI alerts where requested, and work with the Sustaining team to inform the customer of the outcome of such investigations.
  • Follow internal development and release processes.
  • Manage equipment and cloud infrastructure following cybersecurity policies, manage and update software as required.

About you
Essential Requirements

  • A minimum of a BSc or Masters degree in a STEM subject
  • High degree of competency in a programming language suitable for data analysis (e.g. Python / R / Matlab)
  • Excellent communication skills – track record of delivering presentations and written reports
  • Experience analysing complex datasets in practical applications
  • Demonstratable experience delivering research/technical aspects of projects

Requirements

  • Understanding of standard Data Science/Machine Learning concepts
  • A proactive, problem‑solving approach
  • Ability and ambition to learn, both technical skills and domain knowledge

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a BSc degree in a STEM subject

Desirable Requirements

  • PhD in a STEM subject
  • .NET programming skills
  • Experience delivering reports and presentations to customers and being the primary point of contact for technical activities in given project
  • Familiarity with Software engineering concepts (e.g. version control, continuous integration)
  • Experience with Azure – or another cloud provider
  • Experience of vibration analysis and/or condition monitoring
  • Familiarity with the rail industry
  • Membership/Chartership of a professional institution
