Data Engineering Product Owner
Leeds – Hybrid (1 DPW in office)
£66,000 - £75,000 + bonus

VIQU has partnered with a leading supply chain company looking for a Data Engineering Product Owner to help shape and drive the future of their data platform. This is a hybrid role, combining stakeholder engagement, product direction, and technical oversight – ideal for someone who understands data engineering but can also take a broader product-led view to deliver tangible business value.

You’ll be working closely with both business and technical teams – leading conversations, defining and prioritising platform features, and ensuring the delivery of scalable, secure, and high-performing data solutions. You’ll play a key part in helping the business get the most from their investment in modern data technologies.

Key Responsibilities of the Data Engineering Product Owner:

  • Act as an SME for the data engineering domain, particularly across cloud data platforms (AWS/Azure)
  • Own the product roadmap for the data engineering space – identifying, shaping and prioritising features to deliver real business value.
  • Drive delivery of data platform capabilities, ensuring alignment with engineering best practices and technical strategy.
  • Guide engineering teams on best practice, methodologies, and solution design.
  • Lead implementation of data solutions, with a focus on scalability, performance, and security.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into understandable terms for non-technical stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Actively engage with business stakeholders to understand their needs and turn them into actionable technical requirements.
  • Provide input on data modelling, data flows, and pipeline optimisation as part of delivering robust platform capabilities.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with domain-specific technologies and delivery.

Key Requirements of the Data Engineering Product Owner:

  • Strong background in data engineering, with experience in a product owner or product manager.
  • Proven ability to work closely with both business and technical teams – translating complex requirements clearly to both.
  • Experience working with AWS (preferred) or Azure cloud environments.
  • Hands-on experience or strong understanding of Databricks (or other Spark-based platforms).
  • Familiarity with modern data modelling approaches and pipeline design.
  • Confident leading conversations across technical teams and stakeholders – strong communicator and collaborator.
  • Knowledge of data security, governance, and best practice tooling is a plus.
  • Ideally degree-educated in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar, with 8+ years in data-related roles.

Veterans in Machine Learning: A Military‑to‑Civilian Pathway into AI Careers

Introduction Artificial intelligence is no longer relegated to sci‑fi films—it underpins battlefield decision‑support, fraud detection, and even supermarket logistics. The UK Government’s 2025 AI Sector Deal forecasts an additional £200 billion in GDP by 2030, with machine‑learning (ML) engineers cited as the nation’s second most in‑demand tech role (Tech Nation 2024). The Ministry of Defence’s Defence AI Strategy echoes that urgency, earmarking £1.6 billion for FY 2025–28 to embed ML into planning, logistics, and autonomous systems. If you have ever tuned a radar filter, plotted artillery trajectories, or sifted sensor data for actionable intel, you have already worked with statistical modelling—the backbone of machine learning. This guide shows UK veterans how to reframe military experience for ML roles, leverage MoD transition funding, and land high‑impact positions building the models shaping tomorrow’s defence and commercial landscapes.
