About Digital and Technology Services at Birmingham City Council

This is a really exciting time to be joining the Digital and Technology Services team of Birmingham City Council, Europe’s largest local authority. They are embarking on a transformative journey towards establishing themselves as a truly data-driven organisation.

With unprecedented investment in people and digital, a solid strategy, empowering leadership and a newly redesigned service to get behind, they are building digital services centred on the needs of our citizens, business and communities that will deliver on Birmingham’s bold ambitions for the city of today and tomorrow.

They are a multidisciplinary team at the heart of transforming public services for the UK’s second largest city. They create, develop, deliver and operate an exceptionally diverse range of services that have a direct impact on improving the lives of 1.2m residents every day.

They are embracing and promoting a truly digital, human centred approach for the whole organisation, underpinned by collaboration, openness and innovation. The council takes advantage of unparalleled access to data, doing things at scale and new ways of using technology as an enabler to re-imagine the way services are delivered and build the digital council of the future.

Job Purpose

You will play a crucial role in shaping and transforming their data landscape. Your expertise and strategic mindset will be instrumental in driving our data initiatives forward. With a focus on data modelling, data mastery, the utilisation of data lakes, and the Microsoft toolset, you will be responsible for designing and implementing robust data architectures that enable data-driven decisions.

They look after, utilise and secure some of the largest data sets, but what excites them and gives the purpose is not the cutting-edge platforms they design and implement, it is their potential to enable informed decision making, support early intervention and prevent harm to individuals, families and communities, ultimately reshaping the trajectory of people’s lives. However, this is only possible when they select, design and implement their digital and technology ecosystem collaboratively and use a wealth of knowledge from their agile multidisciplinary teams effectively.

Key attributes for this role:

Communication: Articulate the value of data architecture across the organisation, working with stakeholders at all levels to understand their data needs, provide insights, and facilitate informed decision making.
Knowledge of Current Data: Engineering tools and techniques, including data integration, storage, transformation, and modelling components. Extensive knowledge and understanding of the data governance, structures, data quality and data standards.
Results-Driven: You are motivated by results and take ownership of your work. You consistently strive for excellence and are dedicated to delivering high-quality data solutions that drive tangible business outcomes.
Azure Integration Services: Proficiency in Azure Data Factory, Logic Apps, and Azure Functions for seamless data integration and orchestration.
Data Storage and Management: Expertise in Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure Data Lake for efficient data storage, management, and retrieval.
Data Visualization: Advanced skills in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric for creating interactive and insightful data visualizations and dashboards.
Big Data and Analytics: Experience with Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, and Azure HDInsight for big data processing and advanced analytics
