We are seeking an innovative and highly motivated Data Analyst to join the Army�s Service Management Information Cell (Army SMIC), a small team of report developers who provide a Management Information (MI) service for Military Personnel data to the Army.

The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employs around 7,000 MOD Civil Servants located at over 300 locations. Ours is a diverse workforce, with roles ranging from trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff. There are many different functions and professions delivering key outputs for the Army.�

Job description

The Army Service Management Information Cell (Army SMIC) sits within the Army�s Arms and Services, Personnel Administration Branch.

The team�s main role is to interrogate Personnel data from the Military Reporting systems to develop MI Reports and Dashboards that inform decision making and support the Army to deliver its outputs.

A data analyst in the Army SMIC will work with a wide range of Army customers to understand their requirements and using Oracle Analytics Server (OAS) tooling and knowledge of the relevant business processes analyse data sets to create and display results in a format that is easy to interpret and understand.

This is an exciting time for the team in terms of data analytics as platform changes will bring about access to additional functionality not previously explored. This will open up new opportunities to exploit data and deliver more sophisticated reporting capabilities for the Army.

A Data Analyst in the Army SMIC will:

Work with Army customers to understand requirements and identify solutions ensuring outputs are delivered by the most effective means. Ensure the quality of all outputs making sure they are accurate and align with legal and organisational requirements. Deliver a range of routine, ad hoc and dashboard style reports on time and, on occasions, within tight timescales. Interrogate and manipulate complex data sets making use of a variety of presentational formats such as Pivot Tables, Graphs, Bar Charts, etc to best display the extracted data in a format that is easy to interpret and understand. Provide advice and guidance to customers. Support the transformation of reporting services, working alongside delivery partners and colleagues to adopt new ways of working and new technology.

Person specification

We are looking for someone with the following skills:

Essential:

An analytical and detailed approach to complex challenges. The ability to generate new and original ideas. The ability to work with data to identify patterns and trends and draw meaningful conclusions. Competent with Office 365. At least an intermediate knowledge of MS Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP etc). Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex or technical information in a manner that is easy to understand. Highly motivated with a proactive approach towards the development of their own data analytical skills.

Desirable:

Experience of Oracle Analytics Server (OAS) or SQL.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.� This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
