We have exciting Trainee Data Scientist opportunities in the eCommerce Data team at NEXT! Based from NEXT Head Office in Leicestershire.


About The Role


eCommerce Data sits at the heart of how we understand our customers by turning shopping behaviour into insight that drives smarter business decisions.


As a Trainee Data Scientist you will be working across our data science teams within eCommerce, where you’ll learn how data science powers our algorithms and supports meaningful revenue impact.


This is a great opportunity to start your career within an experienced team, gaining hands‑on mentorship and the chance to develop real world skills in eCommerce and machine learning.


Through this trainee programme, you will be given the tools and support to learn the role here at NEXT, with the view to progress into a Data Scientist position within 12‑18 months.


What You’ll Be Doing



  • Learn & Build: Support the development, testing, and deployment of predictive models used in our algorithms, learning modern machine learning techniques along the way.
  • Data Exploration & Analysis: Work with large datasets to uncover insights, understand customer behaviour, and help improve model performance.
  • Production Exposure: Contribute to production‑quality code with guidance from senior team members, gaining experience in best practices for deploying data science solutions.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with data scientists, engineers, and stakeholders across eCommerce to share findings and support business decisions.

What You’ll Bring



  • BSc (or working towards MSc) in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • A strong interest in machine learning, data analysis, and recommendation systems.
  • Experience with Python, R or SQL (through coursework, projects, or internships).
  • A curious mindset with a willingness to learn and develop new technical skills.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to explain findings clearly.
  • Familiarity with tools such as MLflow, Databricks, or git (not essential – training provided).
  • Experience with personal projects, placements, or internships involving data or machine learning.
