Location:Remote with flexible working arrangements, all UK based locations considered. Our flexible office collaboration spaces, for those wishing to use them, are in London, Bristol, Birmingham and Exeter.

Due to a healthy pipeline of projects and opportunities, we are seeking an experienced transport modeller and data analyst with a passion for sustainable transport to join the team. Experience intransport modelling both model development and application, use of big data and an interest in decarbonisation, transport appraisal and the automation of modelling is important.

Although this is a consultancy role, we aim to provide extensiveflexibility, enjoyment and fulfilmentto our roles, to support the growth of our team members and organisation. As an SME, we promoteautonomy and creativity, and strive to deliver impact as part of our work to support delivering decarbonisation insights to decision makers.

Our range of clients includes forward-thinking local authorities like Oxfordshire County Council, sub-national transport bodies like England’s Economic Heartland and national transport organisations like National Highways (see our full list of projectshere).

Our consultancy team works closely with our software and product development team who produce innovative and uniquely insightful digital tools, like Cadence and our decarbonisation tool, to successfully deliver our projects.

We have a series of services lines (which are all underpinned by market areas), including the following focused within transport:

  1. Transport Modelling & Appraisal(e.g. Strategic multi-modal development and application, micro-simulation and active travel modelling, transport appraisal and business cases)
  2. Sustainable Transport(e.g. Local cycle & walking infrastructure plans (LCWIPs), bus service planning and movement strategies)
  3. Net Zero Development(e.g. Transport evidence bases for Local Plans and infrastructure strategies)
  4. Net Zero Transport(e.g. Electric Vehicle charging strategies and net zero transport pathways)

ABOUT THE ROLE

Due to recent significant growth and strategic project wins, we are currently recruiting for a Consultant Transport Modeller to join our team. We are seeking a unique individual who understands the need to do things differently and shares our passion for decarbonisation.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support a wider project team deliver larger projects and additionally manage delivery of smaller to medium size projects. Key responsibilities will include leading delivery of and contributing to technical reports (as required), overseeing tasks undertaken by more junior staff and coordinating data analysis tasks. You will also work with our wider consultancy team, including the opportunity to work across a variety of projects spanning transport, energy, sustainability, and carbon accounting; should you wish.

There is also an opportunity to support the management team in upscaling the business such as streamlining our day-to-day processes to improve our efficiency; such as improving our collaborative business functions (e.g. reporting templates) and providing input to enhance our digital tools like Cadence:https://cadence360.cityscience.com/.

You will support the continued growth of our business, through delivering upon our team’s wider commercial targets; such as through identifying future opportunities and delivering high quality tender responses. We will also provide the opportunity to attend and present at key industry wide transport and decarbonisation-focused national conferences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Modeller within our City Science team you will be responsible for:

  • Using and sharing our systems, best practice, tools and style guidance.
  • Autonomously delivering service line tasks, analysis and content.
  • Supporting and sometimes leading smaller tenders/frameworks/awards.
  • Championing internal collaboration and other City Science behaviours.

This will include:

Project Delivery & Management

  • Contribute to quality delivery of projects for our clients on time and within budget.
  • Manage your own contribution to projects autonomously as well as managing at least a small project at a time including clear allocation of tasks and monitoring of resources.
  • Coordinating site visits (relevant to a project) to observe transport networks and wider conditions.

Technical

  • Development and application of strategic multi-modal models, especially using VISUM but potentially also CUBE and EMME.
  • Traffic modelling using Saturn and micro-simulation modelling using VISSIM.
  • Supporting the wider project delivery team to produce high quality technical reports for clients.
  • Reviewing policy and best practice documents related to transport, planning, decarbonisation and wider needs.
  • Identifying potential future interventions and supporting the wider appraisal and prioritisation process of these.
  • Undertaking data analysis (e.g. behavioural analysis, forecasting) with support from project managers and more senior project delivery team colleagues (if applicable).
  • Contributing to graphics and visualisations, such as in GIS and Cadence.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Contributing to and producing concise reports, informative graphics and compelling visualisations.
  • Supporting stakeholder engagement during projects such as preparation of material for workshops.

Business Development

  • Supporting senior colleagues with delivery of bids, proposals and promotional campaigns.
  • Conducting and leading market analysis to support our market understanding of upcoming contracts and frameworks.
  • Supporting and contributing thought-leadership content.

You have experience working within transport modelling and appraisals projects, comfortable working with and leading technical elements of transport projects. ESSENTIAL

Project Management & Delivery

  • The proven ability to work well under pressure and to prioritise tasks.
  • Strong report writing skills with the experience producing clear, precise and coherent reports (e.g. presentations, briefing papers and technical reports) for a range of audiences.

Technical Knowledge

  • Technical knowledge, proven experience, passion and interest to pursue a career in sustainability with a focus on transport modelling and appraisal.
  • An MSc or post-degree qualification ideally in geography, mathematics, science and/or sustainability related fields.
  • Data analysis skills using one or more packages (e.g. Python, GIS).
  • Transport Modelling software skills (e.g. VISUM, Saturn, CUBE, EMME and Vissim).
  • Some industry awareness such as being a graduate member of a relevant industry body.
  • Awareness of relevant guidance (i.e. TAG), best practice and software packages.

Partnership & Business Development

  • Experience, awareness and willingness to deliver work to time and budget.
  • Good people and communication skills both verbally and in written form.
  • Commercial awareness and some experience of providing input to tenders and/or proposals.

Management Skills

  • Self-motivation and ability to undertake specific tasks with supervision.

DESIRABLE

  • Post-graduate qualification (e.g. MSc, Diploma) or equivalent in a STEM or related discipline.
  • Awareness of relevant professional institutions.
  • Ambition to work towards professional chartership (or similar).
  • Ambition to work towards project management qualifications (e.g. PRINCE2, APM).
  • Experience with data analysis programming in Python or R.
  • Experience with geospatial queries and mapping (PostGIS, QGIS or equivalent products).
  • Experience developing models (including spreadsheet) from first principles.
  • Experience in transport appraisal and use of software such as TUBA, COBALT and WITA.
  • Working knowledge of latest transport policies & legislation, and planning processes in the UK.
