At Octopus Energy Generation (OEGEN), we're on a mission to build a cleaner, smarter energy future. To keep up, we need brilliant people who are

innovative, entrepreneurial, and relentless builders who love problem-solving and want to make a real impact.

We're looking for an entry-level Systems & Data Analyst to join our transformation team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a creative tech whiz who loves to build small projects at home and enjoys using technology to solve problems.

While approximately 40% of your role will involve the essential administration of key systems, 60% will be creative, constructive, and innovative work as we undergo a digital, AI-driven tech transformation. You'll get to learn loads, fast, with a high degree of autonomy and creativity. You don’t need years of commercial experience, just a passion for tech and data, curiosity, attention to detail, and a drive to learn.

Whilst we maintain a degree of flexibility, this position requires an average of 3 days in the office per week.

What you'll do
  • (60% Creative Focus)
  • Build innovative solutions: We need a ninja vibe coder who is ready to hack stuff up and build internal solutions. You'll be given a wireframe and data and asked to build.
  • Drive digital transformation: Work closely with the team to identify a problem and design and build workflows to deliver solutions.
  • Shape a smarter future: Map out current processes and find creative, small ways to make them better. As you grow, you’ll take on more responsibility and start shaping how we use data to make better decisions.
  • (40% Core Systems and Data)
  • Keep our data reliable: Help onboard new data for funds, assets, and projects. Run simple checks to make sure data is clean, complete, and reliable, and fix issues with the team.
  • Maintain clarity: Keep our processes and documentation clear, simple, and useful.
  • Manage critical systems: Support the day-to-day running of 3 or 4 critical business systems. This includes managing user access, system configurations, and data updates.
  • Problem Solve: Log issues and help find smart ways to fix them
What you'll need
  • We are looking for a swiss-army knife who is a relentless builder and solves life problems with technology. You’ll be great at this if you:
  • Have a degree (or similar experience) in something analytical - maybe Maths, Economics, Data Science, or Physics
  • Have experience with data tools such as HTML, Excel (pivot tables, Power Query) and SQL
  • Love solving problems and making sense of complex stuff.
  • Are organised, curious, and eager to learn new systems.
  • Enjoy working with data and spotting patterns or errors.
  • Hold an Interest in emerging technologies, including automation and AI.
  • Communicate clearly and like working with people across teams.
Beneficial Skills & Experience (Great to have, but not essential)
  • Familiarity with finance processes (e.g., accounting, invoicing, fund management)
  • Experience documenting processes or workflows (e.g., using Visio, Miro)
  • Exposure or interest in modern data platforms (e.g., Databricks, PowerBI, Ardoq)
💚 Why else you'll love it here
  • 💰 Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!

Machine Learning Jobs for Career Switchers in Their 30s, 40s & 50s (UK Reality Check)

Are you considering a career change into machine learning in your 30s, 40s or 50s? You’re not alone. In the UK, organisations across industries such as finance, healthcare, retail, government & technology are investing in machine learning to improve decisions, automate processes & unlock new insights. But with all the hype, it can be hard to tell which roles are real job opportunities and which are just buzzwords. This article gives you a practical, UK-focused reality check: which machine learning roles truly exist, what skills employers really hire for, how long retraining realistically takes, how to position your experience and whether age matters in your favour or not. Whether you come from analytics, engineering, operations, research, compliance or business strategy, there is a credible route into machine learning if you approach it strategically.

How to Write a Machine Learning Job Ad That Attracts the Right People

Machine learning now sits at the heart of many UK organisations, powering everything from recommendation engines and fraud detection to forecasting, automation and decision support. As adoption grows, so does demand for skilled machine learning professionals. Yet many employers struggle to attract the right candidates. Machine learning job adverts often generate high volumes of applications, but few applicants have the blend of modelling skill, engineering awareness and real-world experience the role actually requires. Meanwhile, strong machine learning engineers and scientists quietly avoid adverts that feel vague, inflated or confused. In most cases, the issue is not the talent market — it is the job advert itself. Machine learning professionals are analytical, technically rigorous and highly selective. A poorly written job ad signals unclear expectations and low ML maturity. A well-written one signals credibility, focus and a serious approach to applied machine learning. This guide explains how to write a machine learning job ad that attracts the right people, improves applicant quality and strengthens your employer brand.

Maths for Machine Learning Jobs: The Only Topics You Actually Need (& How to Learn Them)

Machine learning job adverts in the UK love vague phrases like “strong maths” or “solid fundamentals”. That can make the whole field feel gatekept especially if you are a career changer or a student who has not touched maths since A level. Here is the practical truth. For most roles on MachineLearningJobs.co.uk such as Machine Learning Engineer, Applied Scientist, Data Scientist, NLP Engineer, Computer Vision Engineer or MLOps Engineer with modelling responsibilities the maths you actually use is concentrated in four areas: Linear algebra essentials (vectors, matrices, projections, PCA intuition) Probability & statistics (uncertainty, metrics, sampling, base rates) Calculus essentials (derivatives, chain rule, gradients, backprop intuition) Basic optimisation (loss functions, gradient descent, regularisation, tuning) If you can do those four things well you can build models, debug training, evaluate properly, explain trade-offs & sound credible in interviews. This guide gives you a clear scope plus a six-week learning plan, portfolio projects & resources so you can learn with momentum rather than drowning in theory.
