Senior Project Engineer - Sonar

12 month contract (likely to extend up to 5 years).

Outside IR35

£500-700 per day

Hybrid Working (Somerset, UK)


We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Project Engineer to design, develop, and optimise sonar systems for underwater applications.


This role involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative sonar solutions for defence, commercial, or research applications.


Responsibilities


  • Develop and optimise sonar systems, including transducers, signal processing algorithms, and underwater acoustic sensors.
  • Conduct laboratory and field testing of sonar systems, ensuring performance meets operational requirements.
  • Implement and refine digital signal processing (DSP) techniques for sonar data analysis and interpretation.
  • Work on the integration of sonar technology into underwater platforms such as AUVs, UUVs, ROVs, and surface vessels.
  • Analyse sonar data for target detection, classification, and environmental mapping.
  • Stay up to date with emerging sonar technologies and contribute to R&D projects for next-generation sonar solutions.
  • Ensure sonar systems comply with industry regulations and prepare technical reports and documentation.


Requirements


  • Experience in sonar system design, underwater acoustics, or hydroacoustic technologies.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or other programming languages for signal processing and data analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with acoustic transducers, sonar arrays, and hydrophones.
  • Knowledge of digital signal processing (DSP), beamforming, and sonar imaging techniques.
  • Experience with underwater robotics, AUVs, ROVs, or naval sonar systems is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in marine environments when required.
  • A bachelor's or Master’s degree in Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.


This is an uutside IR35 contract position for 12 months with the possibility of being extended on an ongoing/long-term basis.


The position is working a hybrid working arrangement with some work required to be conducted on site in Somerset, UK.
