Senior Data Engineer/ Scientist

Are you enthusiastic experienced mechanical engineer that thrives on applying your skills to the design of diverse products across a range of market sectors? Can you mentor and lead a team of product developers in the delivery of solutions for our clients?

We have

  • A multitude of exciting projects in the medical, industrial and consumer sectors
  • An energetic and widely experienced mechanical engineering and product design team

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced and hands-on, enthusiastic engineer to join our group of world class employees. If successful you will have the unique opportunity to work with clients from start-ups through to global market leaders. You will have a passion for technology and will use a combination of innovation, flexibility, and technical excellence to meet and exceed our customers’ often demanding requirements and tight development timescales. You will work across the product development lifecycle, from new concept generation and technology validation, through prototyping and full product development, to transfer to manufacture.

You will have:

  • A Degree (2.1 or above), in a relevant engineering discipline
  • An ability to technically manage peers to deliver complex product developments
  • Mechanical design experience to include the development of new products
  • CAD design experience (preferably with SolidWorks and/or CREO)
  • Experience of design for manufacture and assembly
  • Enthusiasm to work within multidisciplinary teams and multi-task across projects

You might also have (but not essential):

Demonstratable medical device development experience

  • Mechatronic design experience
  • A working knowledge of Kinematic control issues in robotics or complex electromechanical machines would be beneficial
  • Analytical skills ranging from tolerance analysis to employing tools such as FEA and Multiphysics modelling (COMSOL), through to first principles engineering calculations, potentially using tools such as MATLAB and MATHCAD
  • Experience of designing moulded plastic components
  • Project management experience in delivering complex electromechanical products

A Day in the life

You will have the opportunity to employ your mechanical design skills on one or more projects simultaneously across sectors. Projects range in length anywhere from a couple of months to a couple of years. Typical projects will use multidisciplinary skills requiring teamwork; across electronics design, software design, fundamental science and of course a mechanical and product design team that you will be part of. You will enjoy a variety of tasks such as concept generation activities, CAD design, prototype building, experiment design and reliability testing. The role has a focus on the creation and delivery of new product designs to our clients.

At your level of experience, we also be expecting you to be technically leading and mentoring your fellow mechanical engineers and you will also be involved with, and supporting direct interaction with clients through regular external project update meetings.

You will have the opportunity to develop:

  • Your experience of managing projects or work packages to tight timescales throughout the full product development life cycle
  • Team leadership skills, involving guiding and planning team members’ activities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills - confidence and capability in a client facing role
  • Business development expertise by providing pre-sales input and assistance, interfacing directly with clients under the guidance of our business development team.

Your work will predominately be based at our Sagentia offices in Harston, Cambridge. There may also be opportunities to travel to client sites in Europe or USA as well as to support project work at other Science Group sites. You will enjoy a fast-paced environment in which we solve a variety of problems from different industries.

Benefits

You will be offered a competitive salary and benefits package.

Neurodiversity in Machine Learning Careers: Turning Different Thinking into a Superpower

Machine learning is about more than just models & metrics. It’s about spotting patterns others miss, asking better questions, challenging assumptions & building systems that work reliably in the real world. That makes it a natural home for many neurodivergent people. If you live with ADHD, autism or dyslexia, you may have been told your brain is “too distracted”, “too literal” or “too disorganised” for a technical career. In reality, many of the traits that can make school or traditional offices hard are exactly the traits that make for excellent ML engineers, applied scientists & MLOps specialists. This guide is written for neurodivergent ML job seekers in the UK. We’ll explore: What neurodiversity means in a machine learning context How ADHD, autism & dyslexia strengths map to ML roles Practical workplace adjustments you can ask for under UK law How to talk about neurodivergence in applications & interviews By the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of where you might thrive in ML – & how to turn “different thinking” into a genuine career advantage.

Machine Learning Hiring Trends 2026: What to Watch Out For (For Job Seekers & Recruiters)

As we move into 2026, the machine learning jobs market in the UK is going through another big shift. Foundation models and generative AI are everywhere, companies are under pressure to show real ROI from AI, and cloud costs are being scrutinised like never before. Some organisations are slowing hiring or merging teams. Others are doubling down on machine learning, MLOps and AI platform engineering to stay competitive. The end result? Fewer fluffy “AI” roles, more focused machine learning roles with clear ownership and expectations. Whether you are a machine learning job seeker planning your next move, or a recruiter trying to build ML teams, understanding the key machine learning hiring trends for 2026 will help you stay ahead.

Machine Learning Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK machine learning hiring has shifted from title‑led CV screens to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise shipped ML/LLM features, robust evaluation, observability, safety/governance, cost control and measurable business impact. This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for ML engineers, applied scientists, LLM application engineers, ML platform/MLOps engineers and AI product managers. Who this is for: ML engineers, applied ML/LLM engineers, LLM/retrieval engineers, ML platform/MLOps/SRE, data scientists transitioning to production ML, AI product managers & tech‑lead candidates targeting roles in the UK.
