Company mission In the future, almost everything weconsume will simply materialise on our doorsteps – what we call“e-commerce” today will simply be “commerce” tomorrow. But if wecontinue on today’s trajectory, the growth of e-commerce risksdamaging the environment, alienating our communities, and strainingthe bottom-line for small businesses. Relay is an e-commerce-nativelogistics network. We are built from the ground up forenvironmental, social, and economic sustainability. By buildingfrom the ground up we are able to entirely rethink both the middleand last mile enabling us to reduce the number of miles driven todeliver each parcel, lower carbon emissions, and lower costs, allwhile channelling funds to community members. At the same time,we’re fixing the last broken aspect of e-commerce for consumers:delivery. As shoppers, we should have complete control over whenand how we receive our purchases, and we should be able to returnunwanted items as easily as we ordered them. That’s why wheneveryou buy from a merchant powered by Relay, you’ll be able toreschedule your delivery at any time. And if you don’t like whatyou ordered, at the tap of a button we’ll send someone to pick itup. To orchestrate this complex ballet, Relay relies on a widerange of technologies, from advanced routing and planning tosophisticated user experiences that guide our team members on theground. About the role As a highly operational business, we rely ondata science to guide how every parcel moves through our network —from when it enters the system to when it’s delivered at thedoorstep. We’re hiring a Senior Data Scientist to help us design, test, and improve the algorithms that power routing across Relay’sfirst, middle, and last mile. This role sits at the intersection ofoperations research and applied data science; it’s well-suited tosomeone who enjoys turning real-world routing challenges intoscalable, production-ready solutions. You’ll work directly in across-functional squad which includes Operations, Engineering, DataAnalytics, and other Data Scientists, to improve how parcels aregrouped, sequenced, and routed across the network. You’ll also playa key role in shaping our future routing strategy, helping usunlock efficiency, scale into new service areas, and adapt to newcommercial requirements. It’s a hands-on, high-impact role withstrong exposure to both technical architecture and networkoperations. What you’ll do - Design, prototype, and iterate onrouting algorithms across first, middle, and last mile - Buildsimulation and optimisation tools that help us test new strategiesand operational flows - Work directly with data analysts tobenchmark routing performance and quantify gains from proposedimprovements - Collaborate with engineers and operations leads toembed models into planning and execution - Translate operationaland commercial constraints into tractable optimisation problems -Work with MLEs and Staff Data Scientists to productionise modelsand build scalable optimisation pipelines - Bring a scientific lensto operational design; measure rigorously, test thoughtfully Whatwe’re looking for - 6+ years of experience in data science, withdeep expertise in modelling, experimentation, and statisticalanalysis - Strong foundations in operations research; experiencewith mixed integer programming, solvers, optimisation libraries, orrelated approaches - Deep experience with Python and SQL -Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with a provenability to move from ambiguity to structure - Effectivecommunication skills — you can explain technical results clearly tonon-technical audiences - Comfortable working across functions anddisciplines to drive impact Nice to haves - Experience working onrouting, scheduling, or network optimisation problems - Experiencein fast-scaling startups or operational teams - Experience inlogistics, mobility, marketplaces, or other operationally complexbusinesses What we offer - 25 days annual leave per year (plus bankholidays). - Equity package. - Bupa Global: Business Premier HealthPlan - Comprehensive global health insurance with direct access tospecialists, dental care, mental health support and more. -Contributory pension scheme. - Hybrid working - Free membership ofthe gym in our co-working space in London. - Cycle-to-work scheme -A culture of learning and growth, where you're encouraged to takeownership from day one. - Plenty of team socials and events - frompottery painting to life-size Monopoly and escape rooms#J-18808-Ljbffr

Machine Learning Jobs in the Public Sector: Opportunities Across GDS, NHS, MOD, and More

Machine learning (ML) has rapidly moved from academic research labs to the heart of industrial and governmental operations. Its ability to uncover patterns, predict outcomes, and automate complex tasks has revolutionised industries ranging from finance to retail. Now, the public sector—encompassing government departments, healthcare systems, and defence agencies—has become an increasingly fertile ground for machine learning jobs. Why? Because government bodies oversee vast datasets, manage critical services for millions of citizens, and must operate efficiently under tight resource constraints. From using ML algorithms to improve patient outcomes in the NHS, to enhancing cybersecurity within the Ministry of Defence (MOD), there’s a growing demand for skilled ML professionals in UK public sector roles. If you’re passionate about harnessing data-driven insights to solve large-scale problems and contribute to societal well-being, machine learning jobs in the public sector offer an unparalleled blend of challenge and impact. In this article, we’ll explore the key reasons behind the public sector’s investment in ML, highlight the leading organisations, outline common job roles, and provide practical guidance on securing a machine learning position that helps shape the future of government services.

Contract vs Permanent Machine Learning Jobs: Which Pays Better in 2025?

Machine learning (ML) has swiftly become one of the most transformative forces in the UK technology landscape. From conversational AI and autonomous vehicles to fraud detection and personalised recommendations, ML algorithms are reshaping how organisations operate and how consumers experience products and services. In response, job opportunities in machine learning—including roles in data science, MLOps, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and more—have risen dramatically. Yet, as the demand for ML expertise booms, professionals face a pivotal choice about how they want to work. Some choose day‑rate contracting, leveraging short-term projects for potentially higher immediate pay. Others embrace fixed-term contract (FTC) roles for mid-range stability, or permanent positions for comprehensive benefits and a well-defined career path. In this article, we will explore these different employment models, highlighting the pros and cons of each, offering sample take‑home pay scenarios, and providing insights into which path might pay better in 2025. Whether you’re a new graduate with a machine learning degree or an experienced practitioner pivoting into an ML-heavy role, understanding these options is key to making informed career decisions.

Machine‑Learning Jobs for Non‑Technical Professionals: Where Do You Fit In?

The Model Needs More Than Math When ChatGPT went viral and London start‑ups raised seed rounds around “foundation models,” many professionals asked, “Do I need to learn PyTorch to work in machine learning?” The answer is no. According to the Turing Institute’s UK ML Industry Survey 2024, 39 % of advertised ML roles focus on strategy, compliance, product or operations rather than writing code. As models move from proof‑of‑concept to production, demand surges for specialists who translate algorithms into business value, manage risk and drive adoption. This guide reveals the fastest‑growing non‑coding ML roles, the transferable skills you may already have, real transition stories and a 90‑day action plan—no gradient descent necessary.
