Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Data Scientist to join their Defence business unit. In this role, you will lead project teams delivering bespoke algorithms across the defence and national security sector. You'll be responsible for defining the data science approach, designing supporting software architectures, and ensuring best practices are applied throughout.

This is a client-facing role with significant scope to shape technical direction, influence future projects, and strengthen stakeholder relationships. You will also play a key part in mentoring and developing other data scientists, while contributing to broader knowledge-sharing initiatives across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams to design and deliver bespoke data science solutions.
  • Define project scope and ensure technical feasibility during early commercial engagement.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, advising on current and future projects.
  • Mentor and support data scientists, providing targeted development opportunities.
  • Contribute to the organisation's thought leadership by delivering training, speaking at conferences, participating in roundtables, or contributing to open-source projects.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and designers to integrate data science work into AI products.

What We're Looking For

  • Significant experience in data science or a quantitative academic field.
  • Strong programming background; must be able to quickly become fluent in Python.
  • Proficiency with key data science libraries (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-Learn) and experience with deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Caffe).
  • Strong mathematical and statistical skills.
  • Broad knowledge of core data science techniques, such as:
    • Supervised/unsupervised machine learning
    • Cross-validation and Bayesian inference
    • Time-series analysis and NLP
    • SQL database querying and APIs for models
  • Ability to innovate and develop new algorithms where needed.
  • Leadership mindset - fostering technical growth, supporting professional development, and encouraging collaboration.
  • Commercial awareness and experience, ideally including client-facing work and project management.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and present to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience leading teams of data scientists, managing project plans, ensuring feasibility, and delivering against strict timelines.

Why Join?

  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects in the defence and national security sector.
  • Significant influence on project design and technical direction.
  • Career development through mentoring, leadership, and external-facing contributions.
  • A collaborative and innovative culture with access to advanced tools and resources.

Summary: UK machine learning hiring has shifted from title‑led CV screens to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise shipped ML/LLM features, robust evaluation, observability, safety/governance, cost control and measurable business impact. This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for ML engineers, applied scientists, LLM application engineers, ML platform/MLOps engineers and AI product managers. Who this is for: ML engineers, applied ML/LLM engineers, LLM/retrieval engineers, ML platform/MLOps/SRE, data scientists transitioning to production ML, AI product managers & tech‑lead candidates targeting roles in the UK.

Why Machine Learning Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

Machine learning (ML) has moved from research labs into mainstream UK businesses. From healthcare diagnostics to fraud detection, autonomous vehicles to recommendation engines, ML underpins critical services and consumer experiences. But the skillset required of today’s machine learning professionals is no longer purely technical. Employers increasingly seek multidisciplinary expertise: not only coding, algorithms & statistics, but also knowledge of law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design. This article explores why UK machine learning careers are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these fields intersect with ML roles, and what both job-seekers & employers need to understand to succeed in a rapidly changing landscape.

Machine Learning Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Machine Learning Department

Machine learning is now central to many advanced data-driven products and services across the UK. Whether you work in finance, healthcare, retail, autonomous vehicles, recommendation systems, robotics, or consumer applications, there’s a need for dedicated machine learning teams that can deliver models into production, maintain them, keep them secure, efficient, fair, and aligned with business objectives. If you’re hiring for or applying to ML roles via MachineLearningJobs.co.uk, this article will help you understand what roles are typically present in a mature machine learning department, how they collaborate through project lifecycles, what skills and qualifications UK employers look for, what the career paths and salaries are, current trends and challenges, and how to build an effective ML team.
