Job Summary

At the heart of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's ambitious Digital Strategy is the provision of high‑quality data to support intelligence‑led decision making.


The successful candidate would be expected to work on site at least three days per week.

Main Duties

  • Design, builds, and maintains the data platform, including storage, data movement, and transformation.
  • Use data modelling and engineering skills to support operational systems, business intelligence, and analytics.
  • Select the most effective methods to design efficient data engineering processes.
  • Optimise performance of the data platform.
  • Contribute to the development and enforcement of departmental standards to ensure consistency, accuracy, reliability, and compliance.
  • Produce and maintain high‑quality documentation.

We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state‑of‑the‑art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. Job Description – Responsibilities

The postholder must have highly advanced computing skills (e.g. SQL, Python, PySpark, Power Query, DAX) and the ability to adapt computing skills to any new software required. The Trust uses Microsoft Fabric as its main data platform.


Person Specification – Qualifications (Essential)

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, preferably mathematics, computing or statistics.
  • Specialist knowledge and expertise in data engineering, equivalent to postgraduate degree level.

Person Specification – Qualifications (Desirable)

  • Member of a professional body.

Education / Experience (Essential)

  • Advanced knowledge of a programming language such as SQL, Python, R or similar.
  • Significant specialist knowledge/experience of data warehousing.

Education / Experience (Desirable)

  • Knowledge of clinical terminology.
  • Knowledge of the NHS data model and standards.
  • Significant experience of analysing NHS data.
  • Experience of supervising and developing staff.
