We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to help design and build a unified lakehouse platform on Databricks, empowering CMR Surgical to become a truly data-driven organisation.

Our mission is to democratise access to data across the company, enabling every team - from R&D to Commercial to make confident, data-informed decisions. This role is perfect for a product-minded engineer who applies robust software engineering practices to build trusted, discoverable, and scalable data products. Your work will help unlock innovation, fuel confident choices, and ultimately help us treat more patients with the Versius Surgical System.

This is a hybrid role, with a minimum of 1 day per week in our Cambridge office, plus additional time on-site when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Play a key role in shaping the foundations of our Databricks-based lakehouse platform: how do we organise our unity catalogue; how we define and maintain core dimensions and facts; and how we design a platform that is both discoverable and useful to teams across CMR.
  • Write clean, performant Python and SQL, and work fluently w ith Spark/ PySpark .
  • Integrate third-party tools and connectors (e.g. from CRM systems and data discovery platforms) into a cohesive ecosystem.
  • Take ownership of software components from inception to production, ensuring reliability and maintainability.
  • Champion and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the team and wider organisation.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the business to translate real-world challenges into elegant data solutions.
  • Write clear and concise technical documentation

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have/be:

  • Has hands-on experience building Databricks lakehouses , and is excite d by the challenge of shaping foundational data infrastructure.
  • Understands how to engineer data platform for trust, scalability, and discoverability, not just pipelines.
  • Is confident working with Databricks, cloud (AWS), and the broader modern data stack.
  • Enjoys working in a focused, fast-paced team, delivering iterative improvements and user-friendly outcomes.
  • Thrives in a collaborative environment, contributing ideas and learning from peers to raise the bar across the team.
  • Is adaptable, curious, and motivated by continuous learning.
  • Have experience in data engineering, especially in greenfield or scaling environments, or equivalent
  • Apply data-as-a-product thinking: design and deliver data assets that solve real problems for defined users. Ensure each dataset has a clear purpose, trusted documentation, quality checks, version control, and is built to deliver measurable business value.
  • Think like an engineer: Git, CI, automated tests, modular code, alerting, and clean architecture are default
  • Are excited to lay foundational patterns that others will follow
