Senior Data Engineer

This is a unique opportunity to join a mission-driven startup applying cutting-edge data, software engineering, and satellite science to help farmers grow more sustainably and profitably.

You’ll join a growing team of high performers and work at the intersection of satellite imagery, backend systems, and machine learning infrastructure, directly supporting the development and scaling of a ground-breaking agricultural platform.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Own and evolve key backend infrastructure across a wide range of technical areas including:
  • Integrations with new satellite feeds
  • Tractor API integrations to support precision agriculture on the ground
  • Data pipelines for machine learning and crop growth modelling
  • Geo-rectification of hyperspectral satellite imagery
  • Performance tuning of imagery atmospheric correction systems
  • Collaborate with the wider engineering and product teams to productionise features based on farmer and partner needs.
  • Contribute to both R&D-heavy and commercially-driven engineering initiatives, shaping the core technology that drives our product.
  • Continuously learn and adapt – much of the work has only been tackled in academia or not at all, requiring a self-starting mindset and creative problem solving.

What you can bring:

  • Proven experience in Python and key libraries (e.g. FastAPI, Flask, Django, Numpy, Pandas). Bonus: RasterIO.
  • Familiarity with cloud services (ideally AWS), PostgreSQL, Docker, and infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
  • A self-starting, product-aware mindset: you’re comfortable working with ambiguity, proposing and prioritising improvements, and balancing short-term wins with long-term engineering goals.
  • A strong ability to think structurally and communicate clearly – whether writing documentation or aligning with stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience in a fast-paced or startup environment is a plus.

What’s in it for you:

  • A rare engineering role that bridges backend development, satellite technology, and data science in a space that truly matters.
  • Work with a smart, ambitious team that values both experimentation and delivery.
  • Equity at a meaningful stage of company growth.
  • Huge career growth potential, including the opportunity to move into senior or executive roles as the company scales.
  • A real chance to shape a product making measurable impact on climate, food security, and economic resilience.

Mirai believes in the power of diversity and the importance of an inclusive culture. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, understanding that a range of perspectives strengthens both our team and our partners' teams. This is just one of the ways that we’re taking positive action to shaping a collaborative and diverse future in the workplace.

Veterans in Machine Learning: A Military‑to‑Civilian Pathway into AI Careers

Introduction Artificial intelligence is no longer relegated to sci‑fi films—it underpins battlefield decision‑support, fraud detection, and even supermarket logistics. The UK Government’s 2025 AI Sector Deal forecasts an additional £200 billion in GDP by 2030, with machine‑learning (ML) engineers cited as the nation’s second most in‑demand tech role (Tech Nation 2024). The Ministry of Defence’s Defence AI Strategy echoes that urgency, earmarking £1.6 billion for FY 2025–28 to embed ML into planning, logistics, and autonomous systems. If you have ever tuned a radar filter, plotted artillery trajectories, or sifted sensor data for actionable intel, you have already worked with statistical modelling—the backbone of machine learning. This guide shows UK veterans how to reframe military experience for ML roles, leverage MoD transition funding, and land high‑impact positions building the models shaping tomorrow’s defence and commercial landscapes.
