You will join the Service Performance team that monitors the entire suite of DWPs digital services a grand total of 700 software applications and systems. We use Splunk, ServiceNow and Power BI tooling to bring data together and develop quality dashboards which are relied upon and widely used by service managers and monitoring teams.

You and your team of data engineers will steer the creation and maintenance of analytics dashboards to monitor and evaluate the performance of services against an ITIL measurement framework. You will be playing an important role in developing prototypes and other data models to demonstrate the art of possible in data visualisation.

You will be instrumental in joining up our key projects, technical teams and stakeholders there will be lots of opportunities to interact across teams with colleagues at all levels. Your role will be to collaborate with people to get the best out of their technologies and strive for continuous improvement.

You will also lead the creation of a new strategy to help DWP move from traditional reporting to real-time data provision, helping to fix services before they fail. This will provide an opportunity to be creative and innovative, potentially bringing in new tooling ideas, data items and ways of working to bring data to life. The new strategy will also set the future direction for our build teams and allow us to think differently about data.

As the Senior Data Engineer, you will manage the development team, setting clear objectives and delivery standards, line managing, as well as developing the team in new and emerging tools, technology and requirements. You will explore new ideas and support your team in developing both their technical and interpersonal skills. You will also provide technical leadership along with oversight on the products they develop, the quality of the development and the data integrity.

Person specification

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels.

  • Experience of building team capability through role modelling, mentoring or coaching.


Desirable criteria

  • Working knowledge of ServiceNow.
  • Understanding of ITIL and/or IT service management.
  • Line management experience.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information

Pay for this role is from 55,557 to 66,058.

The maximum salary for the grade is 66,058, however a Digital Allowance of up to 7,459 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Stage 2: Interview
