Job Description:

Quant Analyst is a position based in London, reporting to the Trading Quant Lead within Shell Energy Europe & Africa (SE-EA).

You will be responsible for improving analytics and modelling to enhance commercial activities within the SE-EA. The role will focus on modelling trade capabilities, providing innovative/structural solutions, building synergies across product lines, rationalizing tools where necessary, and significantly driving for building a scalable quant platform.

What’s the role?

The incumbent will bring advanced python, machine learning, and coding capability, as well as subject matter expertise on commercial quant modelling and pricing (incl. hedge recommendations) of Renewables/PPA, battery, short-/and long-term price curves, FlexTech such as electrolyser, e-boiler etc.

You will be expected to have relevant expertise and track record in commercial asset optimization and modelling in spot markets including intra-day markets, ancillary services, imbalance cost etc.

The individual will need a strong sense of what creates value in trading business to shape the team’s prioritization and play an active role in establishing a measured risk view to contribute to key commercial decisions.

You will be expected to work in close collaboration with the Trading, Structuring, BD and Fundamentals teams as well as Trading Technology/IT to help deliver the ambitious goals of the business.

The primary accountabilities are:

  • Build pricing, modelling, and aid in automating execution across the trade space (Trading, BD, DS), in the key areas Renewables/PPA, battery, short-/and long-term price curves, Flex/NewTech such as electrolyser, e-boiler etc.
  • Relevant expertise and track record in modelling and commercial asset optimization in spot markets, including intra-day markets, ancillary services, imbalance cost etc.
  • Build unified (short-/long-term) price curves for (power, PPA, etc.). therefore, closely working with the desks, DS, BD, Fundamentals team and risk.
  • Including intra-day and ancillary services dynamics/curves into the existing flex asset optimization models.
  • Unification of modelling/pricing approaches and methodologies throughout the whole trade/DS/BD space.
  • Support in-flight projects to standardize processes and platforms across EMEA trading & BD.
  • Be able to contribute to enable high quality, shared understanding of market opportunities, trends, and value potential.
  • Streamline and enhance the product array and functionality of the desks.
  • Understand the deal funnel to appropriately prioritize new opportunities into the portfolio across the team.
  • Monitor ‘deal stabilisation’ after deals move into the delivery phase ensuring operational excellence and excellent customer experience.
  • Capture and share learnings from both internal and external experiences to Shell to help improve commercial and operational decision making in Shell Energy.
  • Drive the upskilling of the quantitative skillset across products while maintaining consistency.
  • Ensure adequate quality standards and best practices are maintained for the design and evolution of data, analytics library, documentation, model testing.
  • Bring rigour/governance to the delivery structure and where feasible drive towards full automation.

What we need from you

The successful candidate would be required to:

  • Significant experience in commercial/quantitative roles, specifically in the Renewables/PPA, battery, Flex/NewTech, spot markets (including intra-day, ancillary services, imbalance cost) as well as analytics around fundamentals, with a strong track record of performance.
  • An external focus, with expert knowledge of the market, and ability to quickly understand commercial opportunity, and its value drivers.
  • Be precise and execute flawlessly to maximize value captured.
  • A broad and agile, but precise thinker, capable of building trust and credibility.
  • This role requires an ability and willingness to quickly understand and act upon commercial opportunities, often under significant time pressure.
  • Proactive approach and mind set to propose and drive improvement and changes.
  • Sound understanding of credit, market and financial risk, and LoaD.
  • Experience and appreciation of purposeful collaboration.
  • Prioritization skills, distinguishing between urgent, important, and essential.
  • A “can do” attitude is a must.
  • Stakeholder management: the role will engage with a large pool of stakeholders, with whom effective communications and relations are essential. These include:
    • Power: GM / RTL / Traders
    • BD
    • DS
