Principal Statistician / Data Scientist within the Predictive Modelling Pillar
Job description
Site Name:UK – London – New Oxford Street, UK - Hertfordshire - Stevenage
Posted Date:Dec 2 2024
This is an exciting opportunity to channel your passion for Innovation in the field of Statistics and Data Science to help shape the future of the Biostatistics function and transform the way in which GSK uses data and quantitative thinking to drive decision-making in R&D.
Biostatistics is the single-largest functional group of Statisticians, Programmers and Data Scientists within GSK R&D across the US, UK, Europe and India. Our mission is to put statistical thinking at the heart of R&D decision-making; to ensure that predictive models and well-designed experiments and trials deliver robust evidence as the input to those decisions – ultimately making the R&D process more efficient and increasing the probability of success. We are investing in our cutting-edge innovation capabilities by expanding the Statistics & Data Science Innovation Hub (SDS-IH) led by Prof Nicky Best. The vision of SDS-IH is to be the catalyst for innovation and advanced data-driven decision making.
At the heart of SDS-IH lies a diverse coalition of Statisticians and Data Scientists - a synthesis of unique skills and experiences. Together, we are the architects of novel quantitative methodologies, systems, and tools – a living embodiment of our vision.
Why join the Predictive Modelling Pillar:
The Predictive Modelling pillar is a dedicated team of innovators in statistics and machine learning, focusing on complex data challenges across R&D. This team specialises in untangling disease progression and modelling complex longitudinal data, including biomarkers, omics, imaging, and clinical trial data. We think in a predictive mode: by leveraging advanced predictive solutions, we aim to transform the R&D pipeline with robust and scalable models.
Within this pillar, we focus on creating disease progression models that understand patterns of disease across various stages. These models incorporate diverse data types, such as imaging, biomarkers, omics, and clinical data, to build comprehensive solutions that predict disease progression. Our work spans multiple disease areas, requiring expertise in multistate modelling, longitudinal data analysis, and machine learning.
We are looking for an experienced statistician with a passion for innovation to join our team. This individual will contribute to developing models related to upcoming needs across therapeutic areas, and help scale our efforts on digital twins, real-world evidence (RWE) for clinical trial design and analysis, and the design of hybrid or externally controlled trials.
We create a place where people can grow, be their best, be safe, and feel welcome, valued and included. We offer a competitive salary, an annual bonus based on company performance, healthcare and wellbeing programmes, pension plan membership, and shares and savings programme.
We embrace modern work practises; our Performance with Choice programme offers a hybrid working model, empowering you to find the optimal balance between remote and in-office work.

Why you?
Basic Qualifications & Skills:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- PhD in statistics, data science, computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Demonstrable evidence of innovation and technical strength in advanced statistical modelling (including Bayesian method, survival analysis) and/or modern data science and machine learning techniques
- Publications in major scientific journals, conferences, or other scientific proceedings.
- Hands-on experience writing and delivering advanced R and/or Python scripts to implement complex analyses and demonstrating good coding practices (e.g., readable code, reproducible output, generalisable functions, and version control principles).

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:
- Experience in Pharma R&D or related healthcare industry, including clinical trial operations (preferred) and regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrable evidence of influencing and partnering with diverse stakeholders of varying levels of seniority.
- Adept at handling and wrangling disparate sources of data (e.g., biological, pre-clinical, clinical, epidemiological, EHRs) toward the development of complex in silico models for clinical trial simulation.
- Experience working in High Performance Computing environments either for running intensive computational methods or for handling large simulation experiments.
