About the Role

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate to lead on a Barts Charity funded project. The research involves application of machine learning methods to heart and brain image-derived phenotypes of organ structure and function to develop models of biological aging in UK Biobank participants. The role of environmental exposures in driving accelerated aging and poorer health will be examined, with a focus on obesity and environmental pollutants.

About You

The candidate should hold a PhD in a computational subject and have experience with application of statistical and machine learning methods to large datasets. Appointments will be made at grade 5 and offers will be made based on level of experience in relation to the duties and expectations of the role and person specification.

About the Department

The Centre for Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging of the William Harvey Research Institute is a clinical-academic Centre closely linked to the Department of Imaging at Barts Heart Centre and Barts Health NHS Trust. A key focus for the Centre is application of epidemiological and machine learning approaches to large-scale studies and integration of imaging data into population research. The team has an established track record for leading internationally competitive research with numerous large-scale resources, including the UK Biobank, Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP), and the Barts BioResource (

The post is based at St Martin’s Le Grand, adjacent to the Charterhouse Square Campus in London. It is a full time (35 hours per week), fixed-term appointment for 12 months with an expected start date of 1st September 2024. The starting salary will be up to Grade 5, in the range of £42,405 to £49,785 to per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
