The Data + Science Team

At Deliveroo we have a world-class data & science organisation, with a mission to enable the highest quality human and machine decision-making. We have over 200 Machine Learning Engineers, Data Scientists, Data Analysts, and Analytics Engineers working throughout the company in product, business and platform teams.

We have a strong, active data science community, with guest lecturers; a robust technical review process; a career progression framework; and plenty of opportunities to learn new things.

The Role

In this role, you’ll be designing, building and continuously improving the algorithmic, machine learning systems and decision-making processes that power forecasting at Deliveroo. Our goal is to provide accurate forecasting models across Deliveroo domains and markets at the appropriate level of granularity and explainability. This work will help make informed strategic decisions and drive efficiency in financial planning, budgeting and staffing, which will result in a better experience for our riders, customers and partners.

Your focus on joining will be on how we use forecasting techniques to improve how we understand and measure business performance in the past and to build models that help us improve our strategy and financial planning in the future, as well as inputting into other forecasts. The role will involve working with partners in our Finance & Strategy team and require strong collaboration and creative problem-solving skills.

You are someone who knows the fundamentals of machine learning and/or operations research and knows when they should be applied, and ideally have experience with time series analysis or forecasting. You are a keen problem solver, able to think deeply about a business problem and devise a well-thought-out and pragmatic algorithmic solution. And you get satisfaction from working with non-technical stakeholders and seeing your algorithms shipped and driving measurable impact to the business.

Requirements

3+ years' experience as a ML Engineer or Data Scientist

Ability to produce accurate forecasts across multiple business domains accounting for change in trends due to seasonality and other factors with focus on robustness and reusability

Ability to produce simulations and what-if scenarios to assist with business cases and provide projections to support managerial decision making

Strong foundation in fundamentals of machine learning

Experience building intelligent decision-making machines from scratch in industry, designing and building MVPs that quickly get results

Experience with end-to-end productionisation of the models

Ability to see the bigger picture and understand how your insights are aligned with the direction the business is heading in. You should also be proactive in gathering input from relevant stakeholders to enhance the accuracy and relevance of analysis you produce

Ability to take a fuzzy business objective and turn it into a problem that can be solved via machine learning and optimisation

Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment with changing requirements

Experience creating strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including finance, operations and product counterparts

Great communication skills - in person, in writing, in code; to technical and non-technical audiences

The Company

Our mission is to be the definitive food company. We are transforming the way the world eats by making food more convenient and accessible. We are a technology-driven company at the forefront of the most rapidly expanding industry in the world. We are still a small team, making a very large impact, looking to answer some of the most interesting questions out there. We move fast, value autonomy and ownership, and we are always looking for new ideas.

At Deliveroo we know that people are the heart of the business and we prioritise their welfare. Benefits differ by country, but we offer many benefits in areas including healthcare, well-being, parental leave, pensions, and generous annual leave allowances, including time off to support a charitable cause of your choice. Benefits are country-specific, please ask your recruiter for more information.

Diversity

At Deliveroo, we believe a great workplace is one that represents the world we live in and how beautifully diverse it can be. That means we have no judgement when it comes to any one of the things that make you who you are - your gender, race, sexuality, religion or a secret aversion to coriander. All you need is a passion for (most) food and a desire to be part of one of the fastest-growing businesses in a rapidly growing industry.

We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of our hiring process. We recognise that some candidates may require adjustments to apply for a position or fairly participate in the interview process. If you require any adjustments, please don't hesitate to let us know. The Future of Machine Learning Jobs: Careers That Don’t Exist Yet

Machine learning (ML) has become one of the most powerful forces reshaping the modern world. From voice assistants and recommendation engines to fraud detection and medical imaging, it underpins countless applications. ML is no longer confined to research labs—it powers business models, public services, and consumer technologies across the globe. In the UK, demand for machine learning professionals has risen dramatically. Organisations in finance, retail, healthcare, and defence are embedding ML into their operations. Start-ups in Cambridge, London, and Edinburgh are pioneering innovations, while government-backed initiatives aim to position the UK as a global AI leader. Salaries for ML engineers and researchers are among the highest in the tech sector. Yet despite its current importance, machine learning is only at the beginning of its journey. Advances in generative AI, quantum computing, robotics, and ethical governance will reshape the profession. Many of the most vital machine learning jobs of the next two decades don’t exist today. This article explores why new careers will emerge, the roles likely to appear, how today’s roles will evolve, why the UK is well positioned, and how professionals can prepare now.

Seasonal Hiring Peaks for Machine Learning Jobs: The Best Months to Apply & Why

The UK's machine learning sector has evolved into one of Europe's most intellectually stimulating and financially rewarding technology markets, with roles spanning from junior ML engineers to principal machine learning scientists and heads of artificial intelligence research. With machine learning positions commanding salaries from £32,000 for graduate ML engineers to £160,000+ for senior principal scientists, understanding when organisations actively recruit can dramatically accelerate your career progression in this pioneering and rapidly evolving field. Unlike traditional software engineering roles, machine learning hiring follows distinct patterns influenced by AI research cycles, model development timelines, and algorithmic innovation schedules. The sector's unique combination of mathematical rigour, computational complexity, and real-world application requirements creates predictable hiring windows that strategic professionals can leverage to advance their careers in developing tomorrow's intelligent systems. This comprehensive guide explores the optimal timing for machine learning job applications in the UK, examining how enterprise AI strategies, academic research cycles, and deep learning initiatives influence recruitment patterns, and why strategic timing can determine whether you join a groundbreaking AI research team or miss the opportunity to develop the next generation of machine learning algorithms.

Pre-Employment Checks for Machine Learning Jobs: DBS, References & Right-to-Work and more Explained

Pre-employment screening in machine learning reflects the discipline's unique position at the intersection of artificial intelligence research, algorithmic decision-making, and transformative business automation. Machine learning professionals often have privileged access to proprietary datasets, cutting-edge algorithms, and strategic AI systems that form the foundation of organizational competitive advantage and automated decision-making capabilities. The machine learning industry operates within complex regulatory frameworks spanning AI governance directives, algorithmic accountability requirements, and emerging ML ethics regulations. Machine learning specialists must demonstrate not only technical competence in model development and deployment but also deep understanding of algorithmic fairness, AI safety principles, and the societal implications of automated decision-making at scale. Modern machine learning roles frequently involve developing systems that impact hiring decisions, financial services, healthcare diagnostics, and autonomous operations across multiple regulatory jurisdictions and ethical frameworks simultaneously. The combination of algorithmic influence, predictive capabilities, and automated decision-making authority makes thorough candidate verification essential for maintaining compliance, fairness, and public trust in AI-powered systems.
