Join to apply for the Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence (Machine Learning, NLP, Reinforcement Learning, and AI Security) role at University of Bath.

The Department of Computer Science wishes to appoint academics to strengthen our rapidly growing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research Group. We are looking for academics at the Lecturer and Senior Lecturer level, with expertise in Natural Language Processing, Reinforcement Learning and/or AI Security to lead research, teach and help with the running of the department.

Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Research Group

The AI & Machine Learning Research Group at the University of Bath has grown significantly over recent years and includes experienced AI researchers such as Prof Nello Cristianini, Prof Özgür Şimşek and Prof Mike Tipping alongside a strong and growing group of early career researchers. This supportive and inclusive environment provides many opportunities to develop and progress. Our research is organised into four groups: Artificial Intelligence, Human‑Computer Interaction, Mathematical Foundations, and Visual Computing.

We are a highly collaborative team, working not only with other researchers in our department but across the university and beyond. The Department of Computer Science hosts the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Accountable, Responsible and Transparent Artificial Intelligence (ART‑AI), which brings together AI challenges across science, engineering, humanities and social sciences. You will have opportunities to collaborate with partners such as Google AI, DeepMind, the FCA, ONS, NHS, and universities including São Paulo, Zhejiang and Tsinghua.

As a department, we will offer you support and growth opportunities, including career mentoring, opportunities to progress, manage, lead and access to our network of application sector partners—including entertainment, sport, healthcare and technologies.

What You Will Do
Research

You will work with colleagues, students and researchers to develop and publish papers. You will apply for research funding to support your ideas. You will find ways of making your research available to society, for example, by working with industry, developing spin‑outs, collaborating with charities, influencing policymakers or delivering talks and demonstrations to inform and excite wider audiences.

Teaching

You will design and deliver teaching materials for lectures, tutorials and labs. You will be educating and inspiring some of the brightest students in the country, delivering an engaging experience and a supportive programme.

Helping with the running of the department

You will have a few internal roles to help the Department run smoothly. For instance, you might help with student placements, ethics processes, recruitment and admissions or lead a research team.

The support and growth opportunities we will give you

  • Training for an HEA fellowship qualification – New Lecturers will be enrolled into the Pathway to HEA Fellowship. Senior Lecturers will have the option to do so.
  • Mentoring – All staff are allocated a mentor when they join.
  • Opportunities to progress, manage and lead – We’re a growing team and there are lots of opportunities to grow with us.
  • Opportunities to collaborate and build on our networks – You will be able to work with and build on these networks to help with your research and to attract more funding.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate for both Lecturer and Senior Lecturer positions will hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, along with a UG degree or equivalent experience. Membership in a professional body and a higher education teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert, FHEA) are desirable. Candidates should demonstrate substantial research experience in their field, with an emerging track record for Lecturers and an established research profile with funding success for Senior Lecturers. A deep conceptual understanding of their subject, alongside experience teaching at UG/PG levels, is essential. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to form positive collaborations, are required. Senior Lecturers should also exhibit academic leadership and a clear research vision. Both roles demand excellent organisational and administrative skills. A commitment to excellence in research and teaching, student experience, and ethical professional conduct is essential. Additionally, Senior Lecturers must have up‑to‑date knowledge of modern teaching methodologies, including learning technologies, and a strong research strategy.

Contact

If you have any questions or you would like to talk informally about the role, please contact Professor Eamonn O’Neill, , Head of Department, or Professor Özgür Şimşek, , Deputy Head of Department and Head of the AI and Machine Learning Research Group.

Neurodiversity in Machine Learning Careers: Turning Different Thinking into a Superpower

Machine learning is about more than just models & metrics. It’s about spotting patterns others miss, asking better questions, challenging assumptions & building systems that work reliably in the real world. That makes it a natural home for many neurodivergent people. If you live with ADHD, autism or dyslexia, you may have been told your brain is “too distracted”, “too literal” or “too disorganised” for a technical career. In reality, many of the traits that can make school or traditional offices hard are exactly the traits that make for excellent ML engineers, applied scientists & MLOps specialists. This guide is written for neurodivergent ML job seekers in the UK. We’ll explore: What neurodiversity means in a machine learning context How ADHD, autism & dyslexia strengths map to ML roles Practical workplace adjustments you can ask for under UK law How to talk about neurodivergence in applications & interviews By the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of where you might thrive in ML – & how to turn “different thinking” into a genuine career advantage.

Machine Learning Hiring Trends 2026: What to Watch Out For (For Job Seekers & Recruiters)

As we move into 2026, the machine learning jobs market in the UK is going through another big shift. Foundation models and generative AI are everywhere, companies are under pressure to show real ROI from AI, and cloud costs are being scrutinised like never before. Some organisations are slowing hiring or merging teams. Others are doubling down on machine learning, MLOps and AI platform engineering to stay competitive. The end result? Fewer fluffy “AI” roles, more focused machine learning roles with clear ownership and expectations. Whether you are a machine learning job seeker planning your next move, or a recruiter trying to build ML teams, understanding the key machine learning hiring trends for 2026 will help you stay ahead.

Machine Learning Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK machine learning hiring has shifted from title‑led CV screens to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise shipped ML/LLM features, robust evaluation, observability, safety/governance, cost control and measurable business impact. This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for ML engineers, applied scientists, LLM application engineers, ML platform/MLOps engineers and AI product managers. Who this is for: ML engineers, applied ML/LLM engineers, LLM/retrieval engineers, ML platform/MLOps/SRE, data scientists transitioning to production ML, AI product managers & tech‑lead candidates targeting roles in the UK.
