Lead Data Engineer at Hippo – a data‑centric digital services partner committed to building secure, scalable, user‑centred solutions for modern organisations.

Responsibilities
  • Act as a technical SME within Hippo’s engineering community, delivering user‑centred software that meets business requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design and deliver solutions to client problems, maintaining client relationships and troubleshooting issues.
  • Design and manage software development and deployment pipelines, resolving bottlenecks before they occur.
  • Continuously prioritise the delivery team's workload, realigning with evolving operational priorities and complex work‑streams.
  • Communicate prototypes, solutions and progress to internal and external stakeholders in a clear, concise manner.
  • Lead the recruitment of other engineers and support consultants in their professional development.
  • Lead on new business opportunities, writing technical bids and proposals.
  • Promote Hippo’s Data Herd externally through blogs, workshops, seminars or conferences.
Qualifications
  • Excellent experience delivering in Python and at least one other core language.
  • Strong experience with SQL and relational databases; NoSQL databases desirable.
  • Solid experience with a cloud provider such as AWS, Azure or GCP, Snowflake and dbt.
  • Experience building reliable data pipelines and working with CSV, JSON and XML formats.
  • Knowledge of data modelling and broader IT concepts such as security and networking.
  • Agile development experience with test‑driven/behaviour‑driven development and CI/CD.
  • Experience leading complex projects, managing stakeholder expectations and influencing decisions.
  • Coaching and mentoring skills, excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Technical leadership and ability to define working procedures and methodologies for the team.

Location & Compensation

Hybrid remote based in Leeds (LS1 4HT). Competitive salary £67,000 – £76,000 per year.
