Overview

Join Kainos as a Lead Data Engineer (Consultant) in Birmingham, UK. You will be responsible for designing and developing data processing and data persistence software components for solutions that handle data at scale, working in agile teams, providing strong development leadership, and ensuring code quality and alignment with user needs.

Responsibilities
  • Take responsibility for the development of whole components or subsystems within a team, including design, code, test, and defect resolution.
  • Hands-on design and development using open source and commercial platforms.
  • Define and enforce development best practices and coach team members for consistency.
  • Work with project architects on non-functional needs of ETL/ELT data processing pipelines (robustness and performance).
  • Ensure standards and execution of unit and integration testing within the team.
  • Oversee software product due diligence and integration.
  • Lead troubleshooting and tuning activities.
  • Collaborate with Operations teams to ensure the application is operationally ready.
  • Collaborate with Security Architects and accreditors to ensure compliance with relevant legal and security requirements.
  • Advise customers, managers, and team members on estimated effort and technical implications of user stories and journeys.
  • Contribute to technical proposals as part of the sales process.
  • Manage, coach and develop a small number of staff, focusing on performance and career development; provide direction for the team as problems are solved.
Minimum (essential) Requirements
  • Experience leading a team of engineers in implementing data-intensive system components.
  • Experience applying design standards, development patterns, style guides, and operational readiness (automation, deployment).
  • Proficient software development experience in one of Java, Scala, or Python.
  • Experience with data-processing platforms from vendors such as Informatica, Azure Databricks, or relevant ETL tools.
  • Expertise in SQL or SQL extensions for analytical use cases.
  • Expert understanding of distributed data stores and data processing frameworks.
  • Ability to communicate technical design clearly, both in writing and verbally.
  • Proficient in designing analytical and operational data models.
  • A keen interest in AI technologies.
Desirable
  • Comfortable with Data Warehouse methods and techniques.
  • Active contribution to data practices and knowledge sharing.
  • AWS/Azure/GCP Certification in Data Services.
  • Experience in continuous improvement and sharing data best practices.
  • Participation in development and/or technology communities.
  • Practical experience with AI technologies, tools, processes and delivery.
