Job Description

We are looking for an experienced and hands-on Head of Engineering to lead and grow our engineering team in Bristol. This is a strategic and technical leadership role that requires over 10 years of industry experience in building data-intensive applications within the financial sector, with a preference for experience in insurance. In this role, you will play a critical part in developing and scaling our cyber reinsurance platform while working closely with our data science and modelling teams.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Platform Development: Oversee the design, architecture, and development of our cyber reinsurance platform, incorporating features such as:
    1. Reinsurance submission ingestion
    2. Policy administration
    3. Cyber risk modeling (attritional & catastrophe)
    4. Portfolio optimization
    5. Comprehensive reporting (exposure management, capital management, threat intelligence, large risk tracking, and clash analysis)
  2. Team Leadership: Manage and grow a full-stack engineering team with expertise in high-performance computing (HPC), large-scale data engineering, and web development.
  3. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with data science and modeling teams to ensure seamless integration of analytical models into the platform.
  4. Strategic Scaling: Develop strategies to expand the platform across additional business lines.
  5. Hands-On Contribution: Actively engage with the codebase and tackle technical challenges, providing guidance and mentorship to the engineering team.


Qualifications

  1. Experience:
    1. 10+ years in software engineering roles, focusing on data-intensive applications within the financial sector, including at least 5 years in leadership.
    2. Preferable experience in the insurance industry.
  2. Technical Expertise:
    1. Strong command of Python and PySpark.
    2. Skilled in high-performance computing, large-scale data engineering, and full-stack web development.
    3. Proficient in machine learning and analytics applications.
    4. Experience with cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, Azure), DevOps tools (Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes), and data lakehouses (e.g., Databricks).
    5. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks.
  3. Leadership Skills:
    1. Proven track record in building, leading, and scaling high-performing engineering teams.
    2. Demonstrated success in fostering collaboration between engineering and data science teams.
  4. Hands-On Aptitude:
    1. Ability and enthusiasm for direct coding and problem-solving.
    2. Knowledgeable about modern development practices and tools.
