Gallagher Re - Expert CAT Model Developer – AR&D team - London


Please note that this role is ideally based in London but can also be based anywhere else in Europe where Gallagher Re has an office (Munich, Paris, Rome, etc.)

The team: AR&D (Analytics Research & Development)


  • Our AR&D team concentrates on the development of analytical solutions to support Gallagher Re View of Risk across our global business.
  • We are a growing, multi-national team in Gallagher Re, comprised of enthusiastic, dynamic, and team-oriented individuals with expertise in hydrology, atmospheric sciences, space sciences, seismology, spatial analytics, and software development.
  • We work closely with our clients’ team and our Gallagher Research Centre to translate the latest science and technology into client solutions.
  • Our AR&D team constantly advances in-house analytical solutions, combining insurance industry experience with expert knowledge, to quantify the financial impact of natural and man-made catastrophes on our clients’ portfolios across the world.


The role: Expert CAT Model Developer


  • Due to our ambitious growth, we are looking to recruit new experienced talent for our AR&D team
  • We are looking to recruit an Expert Catastrophe Model Developer
  • This role will suit an experienced CAT Modeler with 3 years of experience with strong coding skills, project management experience and interpersonal skills.
  • The role will focus on building and developing innovative analytical solutionsto support the delivery of our unique risk solutions.



The responsibilities:


  • Developing analytics solutions to quantify catastrophe risk and support the business
  • Processing and analysing peril datasets (e.g., wind, hail, earthquake, flood, wildfire …)
  • Working with account teams to deliver bespoke risk solutions to clients
  • Presenting technical solutions to internal and external clients in a digestible format
  • Project management and ownership of development work
  • Actively participating in knowledge sharing within the team and across the wider business
  • Collaborating with academic and industry partners
  • Liaising with offices and teams world-wide, which could involve local and overseas travel



The Requirements:


  • Ideally although not mandatory a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science and/or Meteorology.
  • Strong programming skills (R, Python, SQL)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail
  • Experience in working with large datasets, including spatial datasets
  • Effective communication techniques applied in internal and external client meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritise project work
  • Experience in working across different time zones and with teams in overseas locations


Advantageous Skills:


  • Understanding of the physics of natural catastrophes (flood, earthquake, wind/hail, etc.)
  • An understanding of (re)insurance financial terms
  • Ability to understand business and regulatory context of modelling process
  • Knowledge of catastrophe modelling platforms
  • Experience in vendor catastrophe model evaluation and adjustment
  • GIS software experience (ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • Experience in Data Science
