Actuarial Data Scientist

Location:London EC2R 7HJ

Working Options:Flexible / Hybrid (i.e., up to 3 days WFH)

Type:Permanent

Salary:Ranging £52,500 - £65,500 (Neg) + fantastic benefits (depending on experience & location).

Hours:Full time 37.5 hours

The Actuarial Data Scientist will identify underlying trends in our insurance data using various statistical models and software. This role involves self-directed project work and collaboration with stakeholders across Pricing, Finance, and Healthcare Management.

We are seeking a talented Data Scientist to join our team and utilise our new data platform on Snowflake to drive trend insights and forecasting for BUPA.

How you'll help us make health happen:

  1. Lead Inflation Trend Insights & Forecasting:Utilise Bupa's cutting-edge data platform to uncover inflation trends and support inflation forecasting.
  2. Work on Claims Inflation Forecasting:Forecast expected levels of claims inflation in different areas of the business.
  3. Trend Identification:Detect new trends and changes in data to enhance forecasting accuracy.
  4. Model Building & Insights:Create impactful timeseries models (and other models as required) and deliver actionable insights to stakeholders.
  5. Identify Trends in Insurance Data:Use a range of statistical models and software (e.g., SAS, R, Python) to understand how member, provider, claim, demographic, and other external data link to our volumes and claim spend.
  6. Present Data:Use appropriate visualisation tools (e.g., PowerBI, Tableau) to present data.
  7. Communicate Insights:Effectively communicate insights to the wider business to help steer company strategy (e.g., Reserving, Planning, Pricing, Claims Management).
  8. Automate Processes:Streamline processes using Python, Power BI, and other tools.
  9. Monitor Models:Ensure the reliability and performance of models through effective monitoring.
  10. Handle Large Data Sets:Work with both structured and unstructured data to derive insights.
  11. Collaborate with Engineers:Partner with data engineers to define requirements for model builds and data feeds.
  12. Innovate & Challenge Norms:Lead best practices and challenge existing processes to drive innovation.
  13. Support & Train Team:Help colleagues get the most out of our new data platform.

Key Skills / Qualifications needed for this role:

Essential:

  1. Snowflake Expertise: Advanced proficiency in using Snowflake for data management and analysis.
  2. Skilled in statistical modelling and analysis using tools such as SAS, R, Python, etc.
  3. Experienced in handling large datasets, both structured and unstructured.
  4. Capable of identifying and analysing trends in data to support forecasting and decision-making.
  5. Proficient in building and validating timeseries and other predictive models.
  6. Competent in automating processes using Python, Power BI, or similar tools.
  7. Adept at presenting data using visualisation tools like PowerBI, Tableau, etc.
  8. Strong communication skills for effectively conveying insights to various stakeholders.
  9. Proactive in challenging existing processes and driving innovation.
  10. Experienced in monitoring model performance and ensuring reliability.

Desirable Qualities:

  1. Experience or understanding of the Insurance industry.
  2. Actuarial Concepts: Knowledge of key actuarial principles.
  3. Transformation Experience: Background in environments undergoing data platform transformation.
