We’re on the hunt for a Data Scientist who’s as curious as they are creative – someone who can cut through the noise of complex datasets and turn raw numbers into powerful stories that drive smarter, faster decisions. This isn’t about churning out reports. It’s about unlocking the real potential of data to solve problems, uncover opportunities, and push us forward.

About the role

In this role, you’ll turn complexity into clarity – digging into big, messy datasets and uncovering the insights that really matter. You’ll bring data to life with dynamic Power BI dashboards and visualisations that make information not just clear, but compelling. Working side by side with stakeholders, you’ll cut through the noise, share recommendations, and help shape smarter decisions. This is about impact, taking us beyond reports and into predictive and prescriptive analytics that drive the future. You’ll also be the guardian of trust, making sure our data is accurate, secure, and compliant. And because you never stand still, you’ll keep pushing boundaries, spotting opportunities, experimenting with new tools, and finding smarter ways to make data work harder for us.

About you

We’re looking for someone with substantial Power BI expertise and the confidence to handle large, complex datasets. You’ll have an analytical mindset and the ability to translate your findings into simple, powerful insights that resonate with non-technical audiences. You’ll be collaborative, curious, and focused on results – always ready to turn data into action.

This is your opportunity to go beyond the numbers. You’ll shape how we use data to drive smarter decisions with the latest Microsoft technology, turning insights into impact. Even water is rich in data, and we’re harnessing it to make a real difference for customers, colleagues, and communities. If you’re ready to take data further, this is where your journey begins.

What’s in it for you?

  • Salary up to £37,000 plus bonus up to 20%
  • 31 days annual leave and six bank holidays
  • Monday to Friday based in our office within Edinburgh Park
  • Hybrid working – 3 days office, 2 at home depending on business requirements
  • Subsidised staff restaurant and free gym membership
  • Employee discounts
  • Salary sacrifice schemes including electric vehicles and cycle to work

Why we’re the right fit

We’re passionate about providing a great place to work, where our colleagues feel trusted, valued, supported and empowered, whatever their background or role. And we’re committed to providing an inclusive workplace that welcomes and promotes diversity and provides equal opportunities for everyone. In everything we do, we’re driven to make a positive difference, and always strive to do the right thing by our customers, our people, our local communities and the environment. Life at Business Stream is fast-paced and exciting, where no two days are the same.

How Many Machine Learning Tools Do You Need to Know to Get a Machine Learning Job?

Machine learning is one of the most exciting and rapidly growing areas of tech. But for job seekers it can also feel like a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms. One job advert wants TensorFlow and Keras. Another mentions PyTorch, scikit-learn and Spark. A third lists Mlflow, Docker, Kubernetes and more. With so many names out there, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you must learn everything just to be competitive. Here’s the honest truth most machine learning hiring managers won’t say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every tool. They hire you because you can solve real problems with the tools you know. Tools are important — no doubt — but context, judgement and outcomes matter far more. So how many machine learning tools do you actually need to know to get a job? For most job seekers, the real number is far smaller than you think — and more logically grouped. This guide breaks down exactly what employers expect, which tools are core, which are role-specific, and how to structure your learning for real career results.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Machine Learning Job Applications (UK Guide)

Whether you’re applying for machine learning engineer, applied scientist, research scientist, ML Ops or data scientist roles, hiring managers scan applications quickly — often making decisions before they’ve read beyond the top third of your CV. In the competitive UK market, it’s not enough to list skills. You must send clear signals of relevance, delivery, impact, reasoning and readiness for production — and do it within the first few lines of your CV or portfolio. This guide walks you through exactly what hiring managers look for first in machine learning applications, how they evaluate CVs and portfolios, and what you can do to improve your chances of getting shortlisted at every stage — from your CV and LinkedIn profile to your cover letter and project portfolio.
