The opportunity
Join our OKRA.ai team as we shape the future of AI within the life sciences industry! We are seeking a dynamic, experienced Data Science Team Lead to grow our team and ignite innovation. As our NLP Team Lead, you will play a pivotal role in scaling our operations as we develop advanced text extraction approaches to support our AI-enabled Medical Brain and internal AI applications.
Our preference is for colleagues to collaborate onsite in a hybrid capacity from either our Cambridge, UK or Leiden, Netherlands office. However, we are open to exploring flexible working arrangements during the recruitment process, and we welcome applications from candidates based outside these locations.

Role responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and grow the NLP Data Science team, building a collaborative and high-performing environment.
Drive the design, development, and optimization of scalable NLP pipelines and models for complex problems in the medical and life sciences domain.
Research and benchmark the latest conversational AI approaches to understand which fit our business applications most appropriately based on speed, quality and cost.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to drive NLP technical roadmap, ensuring alignment with the overall business and product strategy.
Effectively balance short-term delivery priorities with a focus on long-term strategic outcomes.
Translate high-level business objectives into technical roadmaps, execution plans, and deliverables.
Ensure the delivery of high-quality NLP, LLM, multi-modal and GenAI solutions that meet business needs, enhance product capabilities, and provide value to internal and external stakeholders.
Establish scalable processes, tools, and best practices for NLP development, deployment, and maintenance.
Maintain a balance between technical excellence, innovative problem-solving, and effective team management.
Prioritise team health and engagement through regular 1:1s, open communication, and constructive feedback.
Encourage a culture of innovation and experimentation by empowering the team through delegation, encouraging a fail-fast, learn-fast mindset.
Do you have what we are looking for?
Skills & expertise
Master's or PhD in NLP, Computational Linguistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or related field.
Extensive experience in NLP and Data Science.
Experience designing and implementing NLP Models (e.g., text classification, topic modelling, NER, LLMs).
Demonstrable experience in a people management role, with the ability to provide mentorship and promote a positive team environment.
Exposure to multiple LLM and RAG models such as, Claude, Inflection, Grok, Llama, Gemini and Cohere.
Experienced in information extraction (e.g., retrieval, entity linking, relation extraction, NER).
Proficiency in Python, MLOps practices, and cloud services (AWS preferred).
Knowledge of content generation, summarization, and text classification methods.
Skill in reasoning and knowledge integration (e.g., RAG, factual accuracy, knowledge graphs)
