Data Engineering Manager – Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Join Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a world‑leading centre for ophthalmic care. This role leads the data engineering team, driving the design, build, testing and operation of data operational services that support clinical and operational decision‑making across the trust.


Job Overview

Electronic Patient Records (EPR) is a major IT project that will consolidate the management of clinical records and support efficient, effective patient care. The successful candidate will help realise a digitally enabled organisation, ensuring staff and patients have access to accurate information at the right time.


Main Duties / Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test and operate data operational services.
  • Identify opportunities to re‑use existing data flows between teams.
  • Coordinate teams, set best practice and standards, and champion data engineering across the organisation.
  • Apply system integration knowledge to product development and team delivery.
  • Provide technical leadership and career development for the data engineering community.
  • Put people at the heart of work, ensuring user experience and NHS quality standards are met across sites.
  • Work with Digital, Data and Technology experts to deliver service improvements and stay at the forefront of new technology.
  • Lead the design and deployment of mission‑critical data services in the EPR environment, integrating with OpenEye.
  • Develop and maintain enterprise‑scale data integration procedures and resources.
  • Support data governance, security, and clinical safety principles.
  • Provide dashboarding, reporting and analytics to stakeholders.


Leadership & Service Management

  • Provide leadership and direction to the service, including wider directorate and business teams.
  • Mentor, coach and line‑manage the data engineering team and services.
  • Create and manage data engineering policy, strategy and capacity‑management for the service.
  • Ensure data engineering standards and procedures are met across teams and providers.
  • Communicate effectively with technical and non‑technical stakeholders, managing expectations and risk.

Data Engineering Core Functions

  • Data profiling, source system analysis and integration across multiple data sets.
  • Data modelling – design and maintain relevant data models at an enterprise level.
  • Data operations – maintain high‑quality data knowledge, security, monitoring and automation.
  • Metadata management – design, operate and continuously improve metadata repositories.
  • Financial management – balance cost versus value, report on budgets and manage contracts.

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant data technology qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Management or leadership qualification at master level or equivalent.
