Bringing passion. Being bold. Always caring. Owning it. They're the values that make us LNER.

Are you on board?

At LNER, we don't just move people — we move data, ideas, and innovation. As we accelerate toward a smarter, more connected future, our data is at the heart of how we operate, plan, and grow. Now, we're looking for a Data Services Manager to help lead that charge.

This is more than a management role. It's a chance to shape the future of data at one of the UK's most iconic train operating companies. You'll be the strategic and technical backbone behind our data lake, engineering pipelines, and analytics-ready data assets — driving smarter decisions, better customer experiences, and genuine innovation across every part of the business.

Within this role you'll also be involved in;

  • Own our Data Lake and Catalogue: Lead the management of LNER's data infrastructure, ensuring data is accessible, high-quality, and built to scale.
  • Build the Roadmap: Collaborate across departments to shape and deliver a clear, business-aligned data sourcing roadmap. Understand bottlenecks and technical debt to ensure proactive mitigation where possible.
  • Lead with Innovation: Champion modern data architecture, best-in-class tools, and new technologies that keep us ahead of the curve.
  • Represent Data Services: Team representation at the Data Centre of Excellence (DCoE) to create and maintain the LNER Data Strategy with particular focus on Data Architecture, tools and ways of working.
  • Be a Culture Carrier: Embed a forward-thinking, ethical, and business-driven data culture across LNER.
  • Deliver Impact: Contribute to high-profile projects that transform our revenue, cost efficiency, and day-to-day operations.

What you'll need:

  • Proven success managing data engineering teams and delivering high-quality, scalable data assets/products.
  • A demonstrable product mentality with experience designing, delivering and continuously improving data products that deliver business value.
  • Experience delivering technical and cultural improvements regarding data governance, data lineage, and data ownership.
  • Hands-on experience using data engineering tools to create and deploy data pipelines.
  • Confident working with a wide stack of tools such as SQL, Athena, Quicksight, Tableau, Power BI and Sagemaker.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills — able to bring people together around a shared vision.
  • Ability to present and articulate complex matters in a simple and effective way to a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience using Terraform and Github specifically for CI/CD.
  • Experience with AWS Data Lakes including Lake Formation.
  • Experience with AWS Kinesis / Firehose for real-time data pipelines.
  • Experience of rail, airline or leisure industry.

What you'll get:

  • Free travel on LNER + 75% off other companies' tickets (for you & dependents)
  • Discounted international train tickets (after one year's service)
  • 50% discount on LNER tickets for friends & family
  • Annual cycle to work schemes
  • Discount, savings and cashback scheme from top retailers
  • Health & wellbeing schemes and discounts
  • Host of training opportunities to help further your career
  • Rewards & awards to recognise when you shine

What we believe:

To be the most loved, progressive and responsible train operating company, we must make a meaningful difference – always doing what's right for our customers, our people, the communities and destinations we serve, the future of the industry we lead and the environment we cherish.

We know that our people are the beating heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating an inclusive, engaged culture that supports everyone at every stage of their journey – and ensures that when you're at LNER, you can always be you. No wonder most people never want to leave!

We are focused on creating a learning culture, to support our people to be the best they can be at work by providing them with the tools and resources to navigate their development and career journey.

To create a culture where our people can perform at their best, the physical health and mental wellbeing of our people is of paramount importance to us.

What next?

If you're passionate about turning raw data into powerful business value — and ready to lead a team doing just that — we want to hear from you – Apply now!

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check

If you are successful in your application and are new to the business, we will undertake a basic DBS check as part of our pre-employment checks. This only happens once we have conditionally offered you the job. Here we check for any unspent convictions and conditional cautions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. If there is evidence of an unspent conviction or conditional caution, the details of these are reviewed internally by a cross functional panel on a case by case basis before a final offer of employment is issued. This however may result in any offer being withdrawn. Further information on how we collect and use this data is available on our privacy notice.

Medical screening

We're a safety conscious business so for all roles you'll need to pass a medical screening and a drugs and alcohol test before we send you an unconditional job offer. For our safety critical roles, you'll also need to have a safety critical medical. Our friendly, in-house Health and Wellbeing team will book a time and place to suit you. The sooner, the better, so please be flexible with your availability. Once your medical gets the thumbs up, we'll finalise any last details and look forward to you joining our team.

The Skills Gap in Machine Learning Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Machine learning has moved from academic research into the core of modern business. From recommendation engines and fraud detection to medical imaging, autonomous systems and language models, machine learning now underpins many of the UK’s most critical technologies. Universities have responded quickly. Machine learning modules are now standard in computer science degrees, specialist MSc programmes have proliferated, and online courses promise to fast-track careers in the field. And yet, despite this growth in education, UK employers consistently report the same problem: Many candidates with machine learning qualifications are not job-ready. Roles remain open for months. Interview processes filter out large numbers of applicants. Graduates with strong theoretical knowledge struggle when faced with practical tasks. The issue is not intelligence or effort. It is a persistent skills gap between university-level machine learning education and real-world machine learning jobs. This article explores that gap in depth: what universities teach well, what they routinely miss, why the gap exists, what employers actually want, and how jobseekers can bridge the divide to build successful careers in machine learning.

Machine Learning Jobs for Career Switchers in Their 30s, 40s & 50s (UK Reality Check)

Are you considering a career change into machine learning in your 30s, 40s or 50s? You’re not alone. In the UK, organisations across industries such as finance, healthcare, retail, government & technology are investing in machine learning to improve decisions, automate processes & unlock new insights. But with all the hype, it can be hard to tell which roles are real job opportunities and which are just buzzwords. This article gives you a practical, UK-focused reality check: which machine learning roles truly exist, what skills employers really hire for, how long retraining realistically takes, how to position your experience and whether age matters in your favour or not. Whether you come from analytics, engineering, operations, research, compliance or business strategy, there is a credible route into machine learning if you approach it strategically.

How to Write a Machine Learning Job Ad That Attracts the Right People

Machine learning now sits at the heart of many UK organisations, powering everything from recommendation engines and fraud detection to forecasting, automation and decision support. As adoption grows, so does demand for skilled machine learning professionals. Yet many employers struggle to attract the right candidates. Machine learning job adverts often generate high volumes of applications, but few applicants have the blend of modelling skill, engineering awareness and real-world experience the role actually requires. Meanwhile, strong machine learning engineers and scientists quietly avoid adverts that feel vague, inflated or confused. In most cases, the issue is not the talent market — it is the job advert itself. Machine learning professionals are analytical, technically rigorous and highly selective. A poorly written job ad signals unclear expectations and low ML maturity. A well-written one signals credibility, focus and a serious approach to applied machine learning. This guide explains how to write a machine learning job ad that attracts the right people, improves applicant quality and strengthens your employer brand.
