LET’S TELL YOU MORE

Apprenticeship Programmes are a great way to earn and learn! Our Apprentice Data Analyst Programme offers the perfect blend of personal and professional development, exposing you to the core of our business.

You’ll be supported every step of the way. Your role will be to gain practical experience in a few teams developing your knowledge and understanding of Severn Trent and the processes.

All of this will allow you to further develop your skills so you can communicate data effectively to a wide variety of stakeholders. Furthermore, you'll spend time with the River Science Team. Joining the team offers a unique opportunity to work at the heart of environmental stewardship. You’ll immerse yourself in rich environmental and operational data that reveal how rivers are evolving across our region. Through diverse analytical workstreams, you’ll help drive initiatives that improve river health and shape decisions that keep waterways central to our business. This role is perfect for those passionate about using data to protect and enhance our rivers for the future.

We welcome all apprentices from diverse backgrounds, as we know diverse minds bring new ideas and a different way of thinking. We are looking for someone who wants to build their career with us and grasp new opportunities, and in return we will support you with varied experiences, training and development to provide a grounding for your future career.

HOW WILL THE PROGRAMME WORK?

You will be based at Severn Trent Headquarters in Coventry, the heart of our patch.

In this exciting programme, you will have the chance to discuss your development and career ambitions in your 1-1 meetings with business leads, mentors, a study buddy, the cohort leader, and the New Talent Team.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Interpreting and analysing datasets from across the business, uncovering insights that we use to propel our programmes forward.
  • Integrating diverse datasets and identifying opportunities hidden within seemingly unrelated information.
  • Building impactful dashboards and data visualisations that bring powerful river narratives to life and support decision-making.
  • Mastering effective data handling throughout the entire project lifecycle.
  • Working closely with stakeholders on data-driven programmes, understanding their needs, delivering solutions, and maintaining engagement through to successful completion.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We want our employees to care and to have a genuine passion for what we do as a business. We need people who want to make a difference in providing a vital service to our customers, now and for the long-term.

If you have the passion to succeed that we see in our apprentices every day, you’ll be a great match for our programme. We’d love you to be someone with:

  • Abundant curiosity – you’re eager to learn and grow in a reactive, ever-changing environment.
  • An analytical mind – you can interpret complex information and translate it into clear, actionable insights for different audiences.
  • Strong communication & team spirit – you enjoy collaborating across multiple teams and building strong working relationships.
  • A positive, proactive mindset – you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, take ownership of decisions, and deliver work you’re proud of.

How Many Machine Learning Tools Do You Need to Know to Get a Machine Learning Job?

Machine learning is one of the most exciting and rapidly growing areas of tech. But for job seekers it can also feel like a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms. One job advert wants TensorFlow and Keras. Another mentions PyTorch, scikit-learn and Spark. A third lists Mlflow, Docker, Kubernetes and more. With so many names out there, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you must learn everything just to be competitive. Here’s the honest truth most machine learning hiring managers won’t say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every tool. They hire you because you can solve real problems with the tools you know. Tools are important — no doubt — but context, judgement and outcomes matter far more. So how many machine learning tools do you actually need to know to get a job? For most job seekers, the real number is far smaller than you think — and more logically grouped. This guide breaks down exactly what employers expect, which tools are core, which are role-specific, and how to structure your learning for real career results.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Machine Learning Job Applications (UK Guide)

Whether you’re applying for machine learning engineer, applied scientist, research scientist, ML Ops or data scientist roles, hiring managers scan applications quickly — often making decisions before they’ve read beyond the top third of your CV. In the competitive UK market, it’s not enough to list skills. You must send clear signals of relevance, delivery, impact, reasoning and readiness for production — and do it within the first few lines of your CV or portfolio. This guide walks you through exactly what hiring managers look for first in machine learning applications, how they evaluate CVs and portfolios, and what you can do to improve your chances of getting shortlisted at every stage — from your CV and LinkedIn profile to your cover letter and project portfolio.

MLOps Jobs in the UK: The Complete Career Guide for Machine Learning Professionals

Machine learning has moved from experimentation to production at scale. As a result, MLOps jobs have become some of the most in-demand and best-paid roles in the UK tech market. For job seekers with experience in machine learning, data science, software engineering or cloud infrastructure, MLOps represents a powerful career pivot or progression. This guide is designed to help you understand what MLOps roles involve, which skills employers are hiring for, how to transition into MLOps, salary expectations in the UK, and how to land your next role using specialist platforms like MachineLearningJobs.co.uk.
