We develop, own and maintain the physical infrastructure, such as pylons and cables needed to move the electricity generated from windfarms and power sources around the country. Every time a phone is plugged in, or a switch is turned on, we've played a part, connecting you to the electricity you need - and we’re leading the transformation towards a greener future, dreaming bigger to bring a more affordable energy future to everyone.

But it’s our people that provide our true superpower. They drive and sustain our growth, their unique differences only making us stronger. But it’s no small feat and we need the best to join us in our mission. So, join us and power the future of energy.

About The Role

As an Industrial Placement Student in the Digital and Data team at National Grid, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the UK’s energy transition by supporting two key functions—Infrastructure Delivery (ID) and Customer Network Development (CND). Both pathways offer unique experiences where you’ll apply digital tools and data analytics to real-world energy projects, helping to improve efficiency, decision-making, and customer outcomes.

Pathway 1: Infrastructure Delivery (ID)

Infrastructure Delivery is responsible for executing major projects that expand and enhance the energy network. This includes building and upgrading substations and transmission lines to ensure the safe and reliable distribution of electricity and gas. The team manages the full project lifecycle—from feasibility studies to construction and commissioning—while supporting initiatives like the Great Grid Upgrade, which connects more clean, low-carbon power to the transmission network across England and Wales.

Pathway 2: Customer Network Development (CND)

Customer Network Development focuses on connecting new and existing generation and demand customers to the energy network. The team builds offers that include contractual and technical requirements, designs appropriate connection solutions, and manages delivery efficiently. CND is also redesigning the connections process to reduce lead times and improve customer satisfaction, playing a vital role in enabling the energy transition through excellent service and strong industry relationships.

As an Industrial Placement Student in the Digital and Data team, you’ll be part of a growing function that’s transforming how infrastructure projects are delivered. You’ll gain hands‑on experience using digital tools and data analytics to improve project efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making—while contributing to real‑world energy projects that shape the UK’s future.

What You’ll Do

  • Support the development and enhancement of digital tools and platforms for project management and reporting.
  • Help automate workflows to reduce manual processes and improve productivity.
  • Assist in collecting, managing, and analysing project data to provide meaningful insights.
  • Work with engineers, project managers, and stakeholders to understand data requirements and contribute to solution design.
