  • Experience with modern software development practices (e.g. version control, reproducibility).
  • Proficiency with visualisation tools like Power BI or Tableau.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Nice to haves:
  • Degree in a quantitative field (e.g. Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics).
  • Experience with machine learning in academic or commercial settings.
  • Strong grasp of probability, statistical significance, and regression analysis.
  • SQL proficiency and experience with cloud-based data platforms.

Location:

This role is a remote-first role with travel to Janet Nash House in Durham and other CEF locations to meet business need.

Why Join Us?

CEF (City Electrical Factors) was founded in 1951 in the UK and has grown to become the UK’s leading electrical wholesaler, with over 390 branches nationwide. In 1983, our North American arm, City Electric Supply (CES), was born — and together today we support customers across the UK, Ireland, Spain, Holland, Australia, the USA and Canada.

Our global IT team is at the heart of our future — leading the charge as we modernise core systems, adopt cloud-first and serverless technologies, and explore how automation and AI can create better experiences for our teams and customers. Our values are at the core of what we do, approaching our work with care, openness, curiosity, collaboration, and a genuine drive to deliver value.

We don’t pursue change for the sake of it. Every decision we make is purposeful — designed to make our business more effective, our tools more useful, and our people more empowered.

At City, you won’t be just a cog in the machine. You’ll be part of a down-to-earth, inclusive team that encourages ownership, celebrates experimentation, and backs each other to succeed. Whether you’re solving real-world challenges or shaping what comes next, your work here will matter.

If you're looking for a place where your contributions are seen, your ideas are welcomed, and your growth is supported — we’d love to meet you.

You can find out more about CEF here, more about IT here, and you can find your local branch here.

What's In It For You?

  • Remote-first working environment
  • Flexible hours built around core team collaboration
  • Company Pension Scheme (3% employee / 3% employer)
  • Access to MySavings – employee discount platform
  • Champion Health – wellbeing support across mental, physical and financial health
  • Free use of the private gym at Janet Nash House (Durham HQ)
  • Learning and development support

Our Hiring Process:

  • Introductory call with our Talent Team
  • Microsoft Teams interview with Global Head of BI & Analytics.

Pre-Employment Checks for Machine Learning Jobs: DBS, References & Right-to-Work and more Explained

Pre-employment screening in machine learning reflects the discipline's unique position at the intersection of artificial intelligence research, algorithmic decision-making, and transformative business automation. Machine learning professionals often have privileged access to proprietary datasets, cutting-edge algorithms, and strategic AI systems that form the foundation of organizational competitive advantage and automated decision-making capabilities. The machine learning industry operates within complex regulatory frameworks spanning AI governance directives, algorithmic accountability requirements, and emerging ML ethics regulations. Machine learning specialists must demonstrate not only technical competence in model development and deployment but also deep understanding of algorithmic fairness, AI safety principles, and the societal implications of automated decision-making at scale. Modern machine learning roles frequently involve developing systems that impact hiring decisions, financial services, healthcare diagnostics, and autonomous operations across multiple regulatory jurisdictions and ethical frameworks simultaneously. The combination of algorithmic influence, predictive capabilities, and automated decision-making authority makes thorough candidate verification essential for maintaining compliance, fairness, and public trust in AI-powered systems.
