ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer to drive the development, optimisation, and maintenance of robust data pipelines, integrations, and infrastructure supporting our ERP systems and enterprise data platform. You will play a critical role in the technical implementation of data solutions that ensure validated, centralised access to high-quality business data.

This role combines deep technical expertise with a practical understanding of data workflows across multiple systems and offers the opportunity to influence how data is used across our Business.

The Data Engineer role sits within the Data and Process Team and is responsible for building, developing, and optimising the conceptual and logical data systems under the direction of the Head of Data. Duties may include developing and preparing business information reports, system monitoring and performing system migrations and integrations.

This role supports the Group Data Strategy by understanding requirements and delivering a centralised enterprise data platform.

To succeed in this role, you should have a background in data and business analysis, with excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

An excellent communicator, you will also know how to examine new data system requirements and implement migration models.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines for ingesting and transforming data from multiple sources, including 3rd-party businesses.
  • Support ERP migration projects by developing and optimising SQL-based workflows to cleanse, validate, and load data.
  • Ensure the reliability and performance of data infrastructure, including SQL Server environments and Azure-based platforms.
  • Implement automated validation, error handling, and alerting mechanisms across data flows.
  • Collaborate with the Master Data Manager and Data Manager to support enterprise data governance and stewardship.
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of a centralised enterprise data platform, ensuring usability for reporting and operational use.
  • Apply best practices for source control, testing, and deployment in a DataOps environment.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation for data processes, technical standards, and system architecture.
  • Proactively monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to data orchestration and integration.
  • Evaluate new tools and frameworks that can improve pipeline efficiency and scalability.
  • Work with the BI Analyst to ensure the data structures serve analytic and business intelligence needs.
  • Translate business needs to technical specifications.
  • Develop and execute database queries and conduct analyses.
  • Develop and update technical documentation.
  • Oversee the migration of data from legacy systems to new solutions.
  • Monitor system performance by performing regular tests and troubleshooting.
  • Recommend solutions to improve new and existing database systems.
  • Understands data governance and how it works in relation to organisational governance structures.
  • Educate staff members through training and individual support.
  • Offer support by responding to system problems in a timely manner.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Essential

  • Substantial proven experience in a similar role including experience in data engineering or ETL/ELT development.
  • High competency in SQL development, including performance tuning and advanced query development.
  • Strong experience with:
    • MS SQL Server
    • Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, or similar cloud data tools
    • Data integration from multiple systems, especially for ERP platforms
  • Strong understanding of data modelling, transformation, and quality assurance techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting complex data migration and system integration projects.
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git) and CI/CD processes for data pipelines.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Bachelor's degree in a numeracy, computer science, or engineering field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with dbt, sqlmesh or similar data build tools.
  • Experience with SSIS.
  • Modern orchestration tools.
  • Exposure to Power Platform integrations (Power Automate, Power Apps).
  • Understanding of master data management and governance frameworks.
  • Knowledge of DevOps/DataOps practices in a data engineering context.
  • Experience in a healthcare or regulated industry.
